10 THE MORNING OKEGONTAN, TUESDAY, APRIL .ST. 1020 DIVERSE ATTITUDES REVEALED BY POLL Hoover Favored In Check of Yeon Building. ONE FIRM IS FOR WOOD Woodard & Clarke Employes Pre fer General Johnson Fourth In Postoffice Tabulation. Comments, favorable and otherwise, on the various presidential candidates were heard yesterday during the progress of The Oregon lan's informal poll among various groups of Port land voters. The ballots were cast In the Yeon building, the wholesale lrug establishment of "Woodard, Clarke & Co., In the corridors of the old postoffice building as persons stopped at desks to prepare mail, and at the music house of the Wiley B. Allen company. Herbert Hoover was the favorite among voters in the Yeon building. Major -General Leonard Wood was a strong second, with Hiram W. John son in third place, as to the republican side. Governor Edwards, New Jersey "wet," and McAdoo tied for honors on the democratic sheet, with Wood row Wilson the only other to receive mention. Hoover beat General Wood by ony una vote in the store of Woodard, Clarke & Co. Johnson fell to a low third position. McAdoo was high democrat. All Hypocrites.' Says One. One voter Said: "Oh, bosh! They're all hypocrites." One man voted for Bryan in spite of the protests of his fellow workers "I'd vote for old Bill Bryan." he said, "if it was the only vote he got." One ex-service man said: "I'll vote for any yellow dog they put up but a military man." One man said: "Oh, put Hoover in and let's have a business man for once." The vote at this establishment was: Harding 3. Hoover 18. Hughes 1. Johnson 7, Lowden 2, Wood 17, Bryan 1, Cox 1. McAdoo 3. In the Yeon building one voter said he'd choose Wood in preference to any of the others, but that even the gen oral didn't measure up to his ideas of a suitable candidate. One man voted for Taft, referring to him as the best American in the United States today. One man satd: "Wood is my candi date up to date; but I may change." Another In for Hoover. Another man said.' when asked for his choice of candidates: "I don't even knw who's running. Oh, yes I do, too. There's Herbert Hoover! You can put me down for him." One man stated that, although he was not a Roosevelt man. -he believed Roosevelt was right when he said that he knew of no man more emi nently fitted to be president than William Howard Taft. "That still holds good. I think." he said, "al though I don't think Taft has any chance o being elected." One man said: "Anybody but Wil son. Roosevelt's so-called big stick is only a splinter compared to Wilson's dictatorship." Several men referred to Taft as sure to be the "dark horse" with possibly Hughes as a second choice. One woman said: "Oh, I d6n't know whom to vote for. I change my mind about every five minutes. But I know for certain I wouldn't vote for Hoo ver." . Some Doubt Wood's Chancoo. Several voters expressed the opin ion that Wood has no chance "because - of being a military man." One man said; "I'm for Wood for president, with Hoover as secretary of state. Then Wood can run the country while Hoover takes' care of the rest of the world." One woman said: "Oh, I can't vote. I haven't read up on the candidates." Which is pretty much the sentiment of nearly all the women everywhere. One woman, who appeared to be 35, said she couldn't vote that she was "too young!" Another named her choice as be tween Hoover and Lowden, and still another as between Hoover and Johnson. Several votes were cast for Ed wards as a possible way out for the still hopeful "wets." The Yeon building vote: Hoover, E9; Hugnes, 4; Johnson, 24: Taft. 10; Wood, 46; Lowden, 15; Edwards, 5; -McAdoo, 5; Wilson, 3.. Hoover Nomination Doubted. "My choice is Hoover, but I doubt very much whether he can be nom inated at Chicago," said one man at the old postoffice. "In the first place, he hesitated quite a while before de claring himself as to party and, next, he talked pretty independently when UNION PACIFIC SYSTEM Oregon-Washington Railroad &. Navigation Co, i - SWITCHMEN WANTED i Men experienced in railroad yard work wanted by O.-W. R. & N. Co. to take place of switchmen who have walked out, but who claim they are not striking. Their action not au thorized by Railroad Brotherhoods. Apply to B. E. Palmer, Supt., room 31, second floor Union Depot. he did make a statement. I will sup port him if he is the candidate and hope he will be. However, I will vote republican, no matter who is nominated; but with Hoover out of the race, I should hope to see a man like Governor Lowden nominated." "What this country needs is a real, determined man. and that man is Leonard Wood," was the comment of another man. "This country has been running itself long enough and is in sad need of an active, aggressive leader. Wood answers the descrip tion and Is my choice for that rea son." "I hope to see Senator Johnson the next president of the United States," said a woman, when asked to state her choice for the office. "He is not afraid of anything and has a mind of his own." Pershing; Advocate Found. "To my way of thinking, a man who could handle the great task as signed to General Pershing and put it over as he did is entitled to pro motion, and therefore I am for him," was the declaration of a young man who wore an American Legion pin. On the republican sheet Hoover was leader, with Johnson second and General Wood third. Wilson was high democrat, with McAdoo second. The detailed vote follows: Hoover, 37; Harding, 2; Hughes, 3; Johnson, 18; Lowden, 6; Pershing, 6; Polndexter, 3; Taft, 6; Wood, 11; Bryan, 2; Cox. 1; Edwards, 3; Gerard, 2; McAdoo, 6; Palmer, 2; Pomerene, 1; Wllsoti, 7. Out of 32 employes of the Wiley B. Allen company voting the result was as follows: Hoover, 5; Johnson, 6; Wood, 2. , REPUBLICANS El 2217 DEMOCRATS OF MARION COCX TY INCREASE BY 635.
