day by Sheriff Stickler on a bench
warrant Issued by Circuit Judge Taz
well, according; to- the announcement
of Sheriff Hurlburfa office last nisht.
Graf has been. ordered by Judge Taz
well to turn over the property of the
estate and account to the court' for
expenditures. The estate was said to
be small.
B'nai B'rith Dance Off The dance
scheduled for tomorrow night at the
clubhouse of the Independent Order
of B"nal B'rith has been indefinitely
postponed.
LEAD DIMES CIRCULATED
Sydney Walpolb Still. Mibsino.
That Sidney B. Walpole, missing Ore
gon Agricultural college student, may
have taken his own life is the belief
to which detectives incline after a
week of investigation. This opinion
Is based on the' fact that Walpole left
his glasses behind him and that he
was practically blind without them.
He disappeared a week ago from the
home of Theodore Burkhart, 965 Hil
ton avenue. He was 25 years of age
and had been compelled to relinquish
his studies because of falling eye
sight. Flags Warn Of Danger. Artillery
target practice began yesterday on
the target range at Camp Lewis, cre
ating a danger rone between Roy.
"Wash., and the camp. Warning has
been given motorists and -pedestrians
asking that they remain away from
road-s where red flags are flying.
Sentinels have been posted on roads
leading to the danger zone to guard
against any individuals getting past.
School Names Changed. Names of
the three grade schools in St.-Johns
have been changed in the past week
through action- of the school board
and a trio of former prominent edu
cators in Portland will have buildings
bearing: their names. The north
school will be the Louise W. Sitton
nd the Central is now the Richard
Williams. The East is to be known
as the M. C. George school.

Federal Officials Recover Several
But Are Unable to Say How
Many Are Accepted.
Operations of an embryonic and
uncuccessful counterfeiter who spe
cialized in the manufacture of lead
dimes, were brought to light yester
day when the federal grand Jury re
turned an indictment against Isaak
Wlrnala, who Is accused in several
separate counts of counterfeiting
coins and of passing them on local
merchants.
According to Assistant United
States Attorney Veatch, who handled
the case before the grand Jury, Wir
nala has made a complete confession.
A home-made cement die in which
the "queer" coins were manufactured,
was located in the shack where he
lived, near Oswego.
According to Wirnala's purported
admissions to JVIr. Veatch, he started
his counterfeiting experience with a
shining new dime as his eole capital.
He Is said to have acknowledged
stealing the' cement and other in-

manufactured, and then to have
stolen a quantity of lead which was
used in the manufacture of the coins.

comfort in Finland, whence he came
to these shores some five years atra.

trial, but Indications are he- will
plead guilty, say federal officials.
STATE VETERANS UNITE
Permanent - Organization of Old
Third Men Slated for Tonight.
A permanent organization of the
veterans of the 162d infantry, known
best to residents of this state as the
3d Oregon, will beeffected at a meet
ing to be held in the armory Thurs
day nighf at 8 o'clock.
J.ne id Oregon regiment was com
posed .of men from all parts of the
state, and it is expected the repre
sentatives from various sections of
Oregon will be in attendance at the
meeting Thursday night,-
A committee of former members of

Clean B1H Given Baker Water.
BAKER. Or., April 26. (Special.)
Baker's water is as free from bac
teria as water can be, acording to
analysis by the state board of health.
The report shows that in the water
there, were 75 bacteria to one cubic
centimeter, and, furthermore, that
after 72 hours' Incubation no evidence
of harmful bacteria developed.
McKinley Absolved by In
vestigation From Accusation '
Involving Liquor.
Fred Peterson and Russell Shaw
han, both of whom have several peni
tentiary terms behind them and a
long list of safe-cracking Jobs
charged against them, were indicted
yesterday by the federal grand Jury
on allegations of altering government
war savings stamps - which were
stolen from the Seio State bank.
They are accused of both altering
the stamps and of having them in
their possession. Prosecution of both
ex-convicts for the alleged robbery
of the Scio State bank late last fall
is now pending In the state courts.
A long list of true bills was re
ported out yesterday by the federal
probers in their report to Judge
Wolverton. A majority of the cases
Involve alleged violations of the
Harrison drug act and the numerous
federal prohibition statutes.
Delph Velf ere is held to answer an
Indictment accusing him of sending
an obscene letter through the United
States mails. He is alleged to have
written such an epistle to Audra
Jackson of Oregon City.
Navy Warrant Theft Charged.
Theft of three sacks of woc stored
by the government In a local ware
house is charged against Lou Harris.
George Gels is accused of stealing
a letter addressed tb Mrs. Elizabeth
Miller and' stealing a navy settlement
warrant for 849.20 from the envelope.
H. G. Summerlin was indicted for
the alleged starting of a fire In the
Umpqua national forest last Septem
ber. J. P. Minada is held on a true bill
charging him with a violation of the
white slavery statute. He is alleged
to have transported Eva May Lee,
a school girl, from Weed. CaL, to
Portland, for immoral purposes. The
offense is alleged to have occurred
last February. E. F. Walden is ac
cused of stealing a couple of auto
mobile tires from a freight car at
North Powder on February 25, last,
in another true bill reported by the
grand Jurors.

Indictments for alleged prohibition
and moonshining offenses were: Mike
Alagich. Nicholas Eeber, John Kush
nick, Enta Furukawa, Bill Adrlch,
E. N. Eawther, L. A. Overton, Jack
Hammer, R. Ninoniyou, Warren Eck
les, Frank Shannon, Harvey Jones,
Fred H. Crook, J. Mitona, Ray Gilkie,
Vera Kllnk, Mike Alagich and George
Mather.
Ben Bourbannaise and McKinley
David are hld in a Joint Indictment
accusing them of introducing intoxi
cating liquors on the Klamath Indian
reservation.

Lee, Ho Hung, M. Maka, Lee Gleason.
A. R. MeKinJey Absolved. -
A not-true bill was reported out
in the Investigation of A. It. McKin
ley, local manager of the Brunswlck-Balke-Collender
company, in whose
place of business a large quantity
of California wines was found sev
eral weeks ago, .and for. which two
men hye heretofore pleaded guilty
in federal Court. The grand jury was
called upo'n to make a complete in
quiry, with the result that McKinley
was absolved from any connection
with the importation or sale of the
liquor.
SALES FORCE CONVENES
Blnmaner-Frank Instructs Sellers
of Stradivara Phonograph.
The entire force of salesmen of the
Blumauer - Frank Drug, company,
northwest distributors for the Strad
ivara phonograph, was recalled from
the road this week for a three-day
convention in order that they might
acquire complete knowledge of the
machine. . The convention started
yesterday at the Multnomah hotel i
and will continue until tomorrow
night. , - .
The salesmen yesterday Inspected
the plant of the Pacific Phonograph
Manufacturing - company, where the
Stradivara is manufactured. A ban
quet was held at the Multnomah last
night.
The Bluamuer-Frank Drug com
pany has Just- taken over the dis
tribution in the northwest of the
Portland-built phonograph, and the
convention now being held by the
salesmen is for the purpose of giving
them a thorough knowledge of the
Instrument they, will handle.

Open Letter Approves Salvation
, Army Campaign.
Indorsement of the drive planned
by the Salvation Army from May 1
to May 10 on behalf of Its home
service work is contained In an open
letter issued by Governor Olcott to
the people of Oregon.
"We are all familiar with the mag
nificent services which the Salvation
Army gave during the late war," the
letter says. "In a general way we
are familiar with the work which
that splendid organization is doing at
home among the downfallen' and the
needy. I can conceive of. no more
worthy cause tha genuine whole
hearted and well-planned organiza
tion to give assistance where assist
ance is actually needed."

WOMAN SENT TO JAIL
First Feminine Moonshiner Gets
$500 and Six Months.
Mrs. Nettle Connett. the first woman
to be convicted of moonshining, was
fined ' $500 and sentenced to six
months' imprisonment In the Multno
mah county Jail yesterday by Federal
Judge Wolverton. She will be at
liberty under $1500 until her attorney
determines whether or not an appeal
shall be taken.
Mrs. Connett was found guilty of
operating an illicit whisky still at
her farm home near Bull' Run. While
out on bonds on this charge she was
arretted by revenue neents on an-
tion of Farm Bureaus will be con
sidered, officers will belected for the
coming year and a programme of
work outlined.
