A most careful quest of the down town district yesterday failed to dis close any marked public enthusiasm for the denim rebellion against the hiih cost of clothing, or any Port lander who had donned overalls as a protest against the price tag woolens. Clcrkn Apiieor in Overalls. At tho courthouse, though. County Clerk Ueveridpe and his merry men stayed staunchly by their resolve to wear denims until the price comes dmvn. and 20 or more employes of the clerk's office attended to their duties yesterday in smock and trous ers of denim brown and wrinkly that lacked sartorial elegance birt be spoke an honest opinion backed by resolve. ' Of the 50 courthouse employes who signed the agreement to wear denims, it is estimated that SO kept the letter of their pledge yesterday. Others donned second-best suits and one, at least, drew on the refurbished relics of his military career. He was James Gantenbcin. deputy county clerk, who went into action yesterday against the registration crowds in armv trousers and canvas leggings, sur mounted bya coat that was tailored In the dear old days "before the wan." J. "B. Kaster, naturalization clerk, con ducted examinations yesterday attired in informal denims the source of considerable wonderment to several prospective citizens, who were loath to recognize official authority in overalls. A halfdozen crusaders, startling in contrast to their surroundings, were the musicians of Olsen's orchestra at the Multnomah hotel who flocked in at. luncheon hour, clad in blue denim overalls and smocks. As they passed through the lobby, by freak of coin cidence, an apparently well-dressed man arose and tossed back his over coat. 'You fellows have nothing on me!" h& exulted. Betneath the overcoat was a new suit of overalls. But instances wherein the denim re bellion had gained a positive convert were sporadic, infrequent and unu sual, to put it mildly. The busy busi ness man and his thousands of em ployes of the clerical staff had other smelt to fry. Overalls contin ued to be worn exclusively by truck men, gardeners, machinists and freight handlers. The retail stores said tha they had experienced no brisk de mand for denims. Police Petition Awaited. Mayor Baker has not yet received the petition of the police, which it is rumored will request that the men of the force be permitted to wear uni forms of denim. or duck or khaki, or something that will slash the pre vailing uniform price tags in twain His decision in the matter will await the petition the mayor being at pres ent as non-committal as a mollusk: Though Mayor Baker gave the sem blance of personal approval to denlra sartorial effects, it is gossiped that the omens at the city hall do not ex tend hope to the police proposal. .Friends of the denim drive, which drove into Portland from a successful tour of the east and south, say that it will yet prevail. "Give it time they plead. The movement is well . established in the courthouse, which stands as the citadel of the crusade. Many attaches, it is said, purchased their outfits today and will appear in them tomorrow. Twenty young women of County Clerk Beverldge's office are to ap pear today in ginghams as a tribute and surprise to their chieftain, who is generalissimo of the revolt. They would not enlist for the unhandsome denims, but the glow of the ginghams well, that was a very different sort of sacrifice. TROLLEY RELIEF MEASURES PROPOSED Pair of Bills to Come Before People in May. BOND PROGRAMME IS CUT Abatement of Charges of $160,000 and Payment of Paving Costs Plans Suggested. Two measures, one providing for the abatement of fixed charges amounting approximately to $160,000 annually now charged to the Portland Railway, Light & Power company, and another providing for the pay- PLAYED AX ACCOMPANIMENT ment of a portion of all costs of re construction and maintenance of pavement between rails and one foot beyond the outside rails by the city, will be submitted to the voters at a special election in May, as result of action taken by the special transpor tation committee of the city council yesterday. iecision to sunmit two measures came about when some doubt was ex pressed over the legality of paying for the costs of repairing pavement between rails. It was argued by Commissioner Barbur that with a question existing on the competency of the city to relieve thr bridge tolls, license taxes and other similar charges, it would be wise to separate the two measures, and if the doubtful proposition was approved by the peo ple it could be submitted to the supreme court for a test. If both measures were submitted as a unit, it was argued, the doubt con cerning the possible legality of one part of the tax measure might defeat all of its provisions. Proponed llondfnfg Cut. The measures will be accompanied by a bond issue of approximately 2,500,000 instead of $5,500,000. as originally planned. The relief meas ures, under the new plans, together with the bond issue, will extend for a period of five years only, instead of 13 as first planned. It was argued be fore the committee, that conditions were almost certain to change within five years, and that it would be un wise to attempt to work out plans for. the distant future. Members of the epecial transporta tion committee conducted an all-day session yesterday. Deputy City Attor neys Latourette and Tomlinson gave the special committee an opinion which held that considerable doubt existed in their minds over the ques tion of the city paying for the cost of reconstruction of paving, when such pavement was deteriorated a& a re sult of wear and tear brought about through the passage of heavy street cars over the rails. Opinion N'ot Accepted. Members of the committee were not inclined to accept this opinion, con tending that in many cases the wear of pavement between rails is occa sioned as much by heavy vehicular traffic as by streetcar traffic. Figures on the cost to the city of granting the relief as planned were not Available last night, but it was estimated that the total cost for the issssil 11 ii 1 in t Children Cry The Kind You Have Always Bought has borne the signa ture of Chas. 11.
