missioners' Action.
Salary increases which will total
$17,000 for the present year and af
fecting more than 100 deputies and
other county employes were voted
yesterday by the county commis
sioners upon the recommendation of
the several department heads. The
increases were made effective as of
March 1. and will be contained in the
county warrants to be delivered to
day, providing the district attorney's
office approves the legality of the
action.
The action of the board is not in
the nature of a. readjustment, but for
the purpose of granting higher pay
to men are finding it a serious
problem to live and maintain, their
families under existing salary scales.
Many Employes Benefited.
The list Includes 37 deputy sheriffs
-who go up from $125 to $145 per
month; 12 deputy assessors, from $125
to $145; ten deputy county clerks,
from $125 to $145. and eight deputy
constables who receive the same in
crease. Six deputy county clerks now re
ceiving $110. and 14 b ailiffs receiv-
rop a like sum. will get $125. The
bailiffs were increased at the request
of CJircuit Judge Morrow, who told
the board he represented the other
circuit judges in asking for relief for
these employes.
Two janitors were Increased fro
S100 to $110. and 17 janitors from $10U
to $105. Three elevator operators
will receive $105 instead of $100, and
two county jail elevator operators
$125 Instead of $100. The assistant
superintendent of the building was
increased from $105 to $110, and the

district court, was the only employe
receiving $150 or more to get an in-
crease, his salary being raised from

and three other deputies in his of
fice were granted rises from $100 to
$115.
A draughtsman in the office of
Roadmaster Katchel was increased
from $135 to $150. and one clerk in
the same office from $120 to $140.
Two cashiers in the tax department of
the sheriffs office were boosted from
$135 to $150, and eight deputy county
assessors from $100 to $115. Two
county jail matrons were increased
from $100 to $115.
Others to Ite Considered.
In voting these sums, the board
made it plain they were not in the
nature of a systematic salary adjust
ment but for the purpose of taking
care of an acute emergency situation
which has arisen through the ever
increasing cost of living. Employes
receiving higher salaries will be con
sidered during the present month.
There is some slight question as to
the legality of some of the increases
because they are in excess of the
limit fixed by statute, but an inter
pretation of this law obtained by the

though they could be granted and
unless District Attorney Evans gives
a negative opinion they will go in,to
client at once.

The new automobile theft bureau
cpens for business today under the
leadership of Lieutenant of Police
Harvey Thatcher. The members of
the new division, created by a recent
order of Chief of Police Jenkins, are
out to make a record and they hope
to ceieDrate the tirst day of the ex
istence of the bureau by nvakiner a
number of arrests.
Plans for the operation of the bu
reau provide for an indexed record of
every automobile in the city. A sim
ilar record will be kept of cars from
other cities and states which may be
in the city for a short time. A check
also will be made of all garages. This
will also grive a record of purchases
of automobile accessories or automo
biles which might be stolen.
The bureau will have its headquar
ters temporarily in room 418 of the
police station. It is planned to have
officers on duty at all hours.
FARMER DIES SUDDENLY
Heart Kailnre Induced ty Running
to Catch Interurban Car.
Heart failure, due to ever-exertion
in running for an interurban car. re
sulted in the death at Gresham Mon
day of James H. Wilson, aged 79.
pioneer farmer of Multnomah county.
The funeral will be held at 3 o'clock
this afternoon from the Gresham
Methodist Episcopal church. Burial
will be in the Douglas cemetery, near
Troutdale.
Mr. Wilson and his wife were on
their way to take the interurban train
to Portland Monday, and ran for a
short distance to catch the car, which
was then at the station. They had
reached the car and had just seated
themselves, when Mr. Wilson fell over
in the seat with the fatal attack. He
was dead within a few minutes.
Mr. Wilson came to Oregon in 185S
and had been farming east of
Gresham continuously since his ar
rival in this state. He is survived
by his widow and four children W.
M. Wilson of Portland, Mrs. M. Clark
of Portland, and Charles and Edgar
Wilso nof Gresham.
However strong a gale may be blow
ing, not a breath of wind is felt high
tip by the occupants of a balloon.
