The Pacific Mail- Steamship com pany, one of the oldest and strongest steamship companies operating in the Pacific ocean, opened an office here yesterday in the Railway Exchanne building. J. G. Melvln, who is in charge as freigbt agent, announces that six steel shipping board steamers of the vest type have been al located for a one-way freight service from Baltimore to Portland. The first of these vessels will leave Baltimore April 25 for this city, and will be followed by five others at intervals of one month. After dis charging here, tbey are expected to be re-assigned by the emergency fleet corporation for permanent operation in the Pacific trade. The Pacific Mail Steamship com pany is now operating about t0 large vessels, Mr. Melvin said, principally in an "around- the world" service. Their steamers start at Baltimore with cargo for San Francisco, dis charge there and continue on through the Orient and back to the Atlantic coast by way of the Suez canal. The service which is to be inaugu rated between Baltimore and Port land, Mr. Melvin explained, it not an extension of the "around the world" service, but is merely the means de cided upon by the shipping board for bringing tonnage from the Atlantic to the Pacific for permanent opera tion. The present arrangement is only temporary, according to Mr. Melvin, but if sufficient support is secured and a reasonable quantity of freight booked from Baltimore to Portland, there is every possibility that this city may be made a regular port of calL WORK OX EGERIA STARTS Barge to Be Converted in 90 Days Into Steam Schooner.
