TL'tw TT v A rS FOR Husband. The theft of a pair of diamond cuff links and $3.63 in money from Chris Traynor, who is appearing in an act at the Pantajfes theater this week, resulted in Arthur H. Baker being given a 45-day sentence in the city jail by Judge Rossman yesterday in the municipal court. Baker's wife, who said she had been working and supporting herself, appeared in court to plead for her husband. Traynor also suggested to the judge that Baker be given a light sentence for his wife's sake. Deputy District At torney Deich expressed the belief that it would be better forjthe mans wife if he were sent up for a long time. Kbgro Had Liquor, Ciiaroe. Shakespeare Walker, burly and black, . who is known to his fellows as "Sun shine." appeared before United states Commissioner Drake yesterday in a preliminary hearing on the charge of possessing, liquor for barter, in de fiance of the federal statutes. When federal agents and police raided Walker's home, on East Thirteenth street, they found 60 pints of port and sherry wine, and 20 quarts of whisky. . The defendant maintains that the beverages were private stock, purchased lawfully before the drought. A. F. Flesel. deputy United States district attorney, is prosecuting the case, which has been continued for further hearing. m ir.HwiT Film Company. Kdward Anderson of Walla Walla arrived in Portland yesterday in search of his son-in-law Frank Clifton, who dis appeared from his home a week ago ami who is said to have been seen the following day in this city. Clif ton is believed to have suffered tem porary loss of memory. He is a farmer and 42 years of age. He has a wife and three children. Mr. An derson enlisted the assistance of In spector Robert Craddock in the search. Apartment House Has Blaze. Residents of the Stelwyn apartments, 168 St. Clair street, were driven out In negligee attire by a fire in the place at 12:30 yesterday morning. The blaze started in the linen closet ana about J100 damage was done. The fire marshal's office reported that the trouble was caused by an extension electric light, which was left burning, coming in contact with some of the linen The apartment house is owned by the Pullman Investment company. The dates for the annual Oregon Jersey Jubilee have been set for May 4. 5 and 6. For this occasion M. D. Munn, presi dent of the national dairy council will be here and many of the Wash ington Jersey breeders will come to Oregon and make the tour of some of the big Jersey farms. The board of directors of the Oregon dairy coun cil will assist in entertaining Presi dent Munn. Rev. W. S. Gordon to Speak. More than 40 members of the Mount Tabor Methodist Episcopal church have signed cards pledging their endeavor to "win one" for Christ. This even ing at 8 o'clock Rev. W. S. Gordon of Sellwood Methodist Episcopal church will speak. Friday evening Edward L. Wells of the United States weather bureau will be in charge of. the service. There will be no meeting Saturday evening. Hot Steel Hits Boilermaker. Albert Thews of the Anston hotel, a boilermaker employed at the O.-W. R. R. & N. shops, was taken to the St. Vincent's hospital early yesterday morning after he had been hit by a flying piece of hot steel. He was burned over the left eye and re ceived a gash in the face. That the army will participate In the Ad club caravan, starting May 18. which the Ad club organizations all over the northwest are to conduct to take their delegations to the annual con vention to be held at Stockton, is the news contained in a letter received by W. P. Strandborg from Lieutenant Colonel G. E. Nelson, in charge of the army motor transport corps on the Pacific coast. Two officers and several enlisted men will make the trip, using one staff observation car and two other machines, he states, while the recruiting service will also be represented. Alleged Moonshiner Freed. J. W. Elkins of Homestead, Baker county, charged with, the illicit sale of liquor, and its unlawful manufacture. was freed by a jury in federal court yesterday morning, after eight hours' deliberation. The case against Elkins was based upon circumstantial evidence. When Elkins was arrested, early in August, he told his captors that he would be with them as soon as he got his horse. The officers agreed to this, and Elkins walked toward the stable. Four months in tervened before he was again appre hended. Hoover's Friends to Organize. Several of the . boyhood friends of Herbert Hoover from Salem and New- berg have notified Chester G. Murphy of their intentions of attending the meeting at the central library Friday night, when plans for organizing the Hoover Republican club of Oregon will be perfected. Mr. Murphy an nounces that petitions for circulation to place Hoover's name on the repub lican ballot will be ready for volun teers to circulate and sign. The speakers will be personal friends and admirers of Hoover. Mandamus Hearing Postponed. Hearing of the mandamus proceed ings brought by F. A. Blanck to pre vent the county commissioners from awarding a contract to the Star Sand company for the macadamizing of the St. Johns river road has been post poned until tomorrow morning. The case was scheduled for argument before Presiding Judge McCourt to day. The plaintiff alleges the county will lose a considerable sum of money if the contract is awarded to the Star Sand company, as a majority of the board propose to do. "Open House" Announced. The Pa cific Phonograph Manufacturing com pany, located at East Thirty-third street and Broadway, manufacturers of the Stradivara phonograph, an nounces that it will hold an open house today for the benefit of mem bers of the Progressive Business Men's club, the Portland Ad club, the Realty Board and various other city clubs, on which occasion the plant and the actual manufacture of the phonograph will be open for inspec tion. People Trt St. James' Remedt. "St James' Prescription for Sickness" is the topic of Dr. W. T. McEIveen's lecture this evening at the First Con gregational church. This is the final lecture on "Christian Psychotherapy." These lectures have been so well at tended that it was necessary to use the church auditorium. A most in teresting part of the evening was the questions and answers which fol lowed the lecture. As a result of the lecture Dr. McElveen is treating quite a number of people. Upon inquiry I found that the complaint was that I. placed empty milk cans on the sidewalk and that the hood over the range did not properly conduct all of the smoke from the kitchen. These two infractions of the city health ordinance have been corrected; the case did not come to trial, and everything is O. K. BIRK HOLZ AT SAX PEDRO TODAY Ex-Captain of Spruce Production Division Charged With Sending Mortgaged Car South. REV. TAYLOR IS SPEAKER Minister of Astoria Addresses Baker Theater Meeting. Rev. F. C Taylor of Astoria was the speaker at the noonday Passion and Holy Week meeting yesterday at the Baker theater, which had the largest attendance of any meeting so far, in spite of the rain.. Rev. Mr. Taylor said in part: "As we look out upon the world of unrest and dissatisfaction, we cannot say that It ia because Christianity is a failure, but we can say that It is because Christianity Is not applied. When E. D. Birkholz, former cap tain in the -spruce production division, steps down the gangplank from steamer arriving at San Pedro, Cal. from Portland this morning, he will be arrested on a telegraphic warrant charging him with larceny by bailee. A warrant for the former captains arrest on a felony charge was sent to the sheriff at San Pedro yesterday by Deputy District Attorney Dempsey. According to the complaint of Mrs, Ora Kisor filed in the district attor ney's office, Birkholz shipped his au tomobile to California shortly after he had mortgaged it to Mrs. .Kisor. Under the state law he was prohibited from taking the automobile out of the state and on conviction the offender may be punished by imprisonment in the penitentiary. After his discharge from the service Captain Birkholz was an automobile salesman in Portland until he left for San Pedro last week. Accident Not Reported, Charge. Forrest Cobb, who lives at 310 Mult nomah club, was notified to appear in municipal court today to answer to a charge of failing to report an accident within the legal time by Officer Tully yesterday. Cobb's auto mobile was struck Monday at Broad way and Davis street by a motor cycle ridden by Hugo Michelfelder, 560 Bertha street. Cobb told the officer that he did not know it was necessary to report. Extradition to Be Asked. Deputy Sheriff Beckman left last night for Chicago, where he will present ex tradition papers to Governor Lowden of Illinois to procure the return to Portland of Walter Wijas, under in dictment here for an alleged criminal attack on a 13-year-old niece. Wijaa is under arrest at Chicago, having been apprehended there last week, according to word received by Sheriff Hurlburt Charge Is Disorderly Conduct. John Schaffer was arrested on a charge of disorderly conduct yester day afternoon by Motorcycle Patrol man R. L Schad on complaint of Mrs. L. J. Brant of 1524 Vancouver avenue. Mrs. Brant told the officer that the man had been hanging about in the vicinity of her house for two hours making suggestive motions and watching her. He will be given a hearing in the municipal court today. Pair Sentenced to SO Days. Henrico Martinez and Fred Acosta, who were charged with the larceny of a quantity of clothing from the room or John Manta on East Burn side street, were given "30 days each In- jail by Municipal Judge Rossman yesterday. The two were arrested crossing the Burnslde bridge by In spectors Collins and Colemah with a quantity of clothing which was later identified by Manta. Recovery or $947 Sought. J. W. Lowe is plaintiff In a circuit court damage suit against the Auto Transit company, in which he seeks recovery of 947 as a result of injuries he says were sustained by himself and his automobile in a ' collision with an automobile owned by the defendant company on the Derby-street ap proach to the Interstate bridge, No vember 18, last. Charge Involves Touno Girl. Arthur Kelt, foundry worker, who Is charged with a serious statutory offence Involving a 14-year-old girl was arrested yesterday by Inspectors Schulpius and La Salle at 667 Holland street. His bail was placed 'at 12500 and he will be given a hearing today. Charges against Kelt were filed by Deputy District Attorney Deich. Damage Suit Filed. Damages amounting to $10,250 are demanded by W. H. Harris In a suit filed In circuit court yesterday against Roy Kenison. The plaintiff alleges Keni son trespassed on his property at 1320 Kelly street last - Sunday and gave him a severe beating. He alleges there was no justification for the alleged trespass or assault.
