Sailing early this morning for southeast ern Alaska, the steamer Admiral Goodrich carried full cargoes of cannery supplies and crews for tha canneries at Hunter bay and Plllor bay. Mr. Dawson is brimful of en thusiasm for tha possibilities of Port land as a port. Mr. and Mrs. Dawsoa are staying at the Portland hotel for the time until they can make arrangements to get definitely located. Plan to Be Announced. Although he declared that the Columbia-Pacific Shipping company has big things in store for Portland in the near future. Mr. Daw-son said it would be impossible for him to make definite announcement of plans until after he had met with his board of directors today. Mr. Dawson will be installed for mally as general manager of the com pany at the meeting of the directors today. The situation of Portland on an inland waterway is no more unfavor able for shipping than is the situa tion of Philadelphia and Baltimore in the east, Mr. Dawson declared. He said that both these eastern cities are outstanding factors in the commer cial development of the country, and there was no reason why this city should not compete favorably with them and other cities as a port of the first class. "In one respect at least Portland has the advantage over Philadelphia from the standpoint of port facili ties," Mr. Dawson declared. "In the winter time Philadelphia is compelled to combat the ice with ice breakers in order to keep the channel clear for vessels, a practice which would hardly be necessary here with the Portland climate." New York Office Opened. Mr. Dawson had been connected with Sudden & Christenson for many years in executive capacities and just previous te coming west he organ ized and opened the New York office of that company. During the war he held a responsible position with the division of operations of the shipping board. After accepting the position with the Columbia-Pacific Shipping com pany Mr. Dawson came west, stop ping en route to Portland for a few days at San Francisco. He takes the place left vacant by the resignation of A. C. Stubbe. Mr. Stuhbe an nounced that he planned, with the assistance of certain Portland inter ests, to build up a new service from this port. The Korea brought a full general cargo. The Pacific American Steamship asso ciation is in favor of the establishment of a load line for American ships, as an nounced today. The association will ap point a committee of experts who will confer among the various operators here and will then discuss the load line with a sub-committee, which is making an in vestigation on this coast, preparatory to rendering a report to the committee ap pointed by the United States department of 'commerce and labor. The members of the association do not, however, favor the adoption of the Brit ish Plimsoll mark. They say that some thing more elastic is needed to suit Amer ican shipping. The steam lumber schoon ers, for instance, will have to bear a distinctive mark of their own. for the type te unique and the mark will have to be placed high up. It is also said that the !
