Highways Depends on Action of

Important road Drojects in all sec-
Hons of Oregon are in abeyance pend- j
ing the vote of the people at the spe- m
cal election in May. If the people 1 4
utional i A
Last 4 Days of the Store-Wide February Drive: "24 Days of Sales"
amendment increasing the state's
debtedness limit for road work from
the present 1 per cent to 4 per cent,
the highway commission will have
arallable, to use as required In the
next few years, about $20,000,000. If
tbe amendment carries, the commis
sion ts authorized, under an act
passed by the special session of the
legislature, to sell $10,000,000 of
feonds as needed.
All Oregon, especially southern
Oregon and in particular Jackson
county, are interested in the con
struction of a good highway to Cra
ter lake, conceded to be one of the
greatest scenic wonders on the globe.
Jackson county is willing to pay 25
per cent of the cost of paving this
highway for a large part of its length.
The highway commission is already '
on record as promising to pave six
miles, but if the constitutional
amendment carries there will be a j
sew deal- If the highway is to be
paved it will probably be made a two
or three-year project, depending on
bow the work should be handled. It
is too big a job for one year.
Crater Lake Bis; Asset.
Opening up a highway to Crater
lake has been the dream and ambi
tion of southern Oregon lor years.
Once the road is completed it
attract thousands of tourists and
bring in millions of tourists dollars
to the state. Crater lake is such a
valuable asset that other communi
ties than Jackson county want a good
rad connection with it. Klamath
county wants to have a road built to
the lake, and Douglas county wants
the Tiller trail developed into a high
way, although at present Tiller trail
it about the size of a deer trait Til
ler, trail, however, would cut down
the' mileage to the fttke from the
north and in time would relieve con
gestion on part of the Pacific high
way. Also contingent on the special elec
tion is further improvement of the
Coos Bay-Roseburg highway. The
worst 14-mile section is under con
tract, and this Is the most expensive
grading in the state, but for the re
mainder of the road to be opened up
and given a suitable width and grade
more funds are necessary. The car
rying out of the plans of the com-
mission for Tillamook county also
tit-pend s on the result of the election,
the same being true of sex-eral other
counties in western and eastern Ore
gon. The long-desired opening from
Bend into Klamath and to Iakeview
via La Pine haa been started, for
some contracts for mileage have been
let, but to make the road what it
should be the commission has to de
pend on the adoption of the proposed
4YMi0t.it utional amendment otherwise
it will require years to get the road
finished by doing a little dab now
and then. j
I nloa County Issues Bonds.
Although Union county has bonded!
ttef heavily for paved roads, the
matter of the grading and rock 'is
an important Item. The county is
willing to furnish the surface on much
of the work and wants the state to
grade, but the commission is too short
on funds to even commit itself to the
grading until after the election. Nor
will the commission make any prom
ises on the Old Oregon Trail until
after the election.
It probably will be June before the
state highway commission can deter
mine its course for this year. - If the
amendment carries in May, the com
mission, at the June meeting, will
know "where It is at", and Will cut
ta cloth accordingly. If the amend
ment fails, the commission will then
devote its resources to the comple
tion of the two main arterial high
ways, as these are of greatest state
wide benefit.

Italy Inspired This Fine
Furniture for the
Dining Room
Certain specialty American manufacturers are broad
ening their inspiration. Instead of confining their repro
ductions to those of English masters, they are now copy
ing the fine old Italian pieces heretofore almost unobtain
able. . - - .
The Furniture Gallery has great pleasure in
announcing the arrival of particularly interesting
" Italian reproductions of dining room suites.
One suite is carved and intro
duces antique polychrome.
Another has an adaptation of
a refectory table which is wider
than usual and more suitable for
American home use.
Among the new reproductions
of old English styles are Queen
Anne and Hepplewhite suites for
beautiful. Colonial homes.
Prices for suites are $757,
$975, $1153, $ 1385 upward.

ranges and yet occupies only
the space of one. Bums gas and
