Ernest Descamps, wealthy French
resident of Portland and Beaverton,
who has been missing since Thursday
- of last week, and who is thought to
have, been the victim of the brutal
axe murderers who left portions of
the body of their victim scattered in
Sullivan's gulch and in Kenton.
Inspectors Hellyer. Tackabexry and
Thillips, who have been investigating
the murder, and the disappearance of
Descamps, under the direction of
Lieutenant Goltz, admit that nothing
new has been uncovered, although
they are at work on several theories
advanced by friends of the missing
. man.
Sara Goldenberg. a locksmith at 249
Taylor street, told the police inspect
ors he saw Descamps at Fifth and
Morrison streets at 9:30 o'clock Satur
day morning, two days after he dis
appeared so mysteriously. Golden
berg said he had known Descamps for
years, but admitted he might have
been mistaken.
Hector Moamal. a close personal
friend of Descamps, has been ap
' pointed administrator of his property
by Circuit Judge Tazwell. who also
authorized a reward of $1000 for the
apprehension of the persons responr
sible for Descamps disappearance
The court appointed Fred W. German,
Ralph W. Hoyt and William Ballis as
appraisers to inventory -Mr. Des
camps' property. Mr. Moumal also
received an order authorizing hira to
open Mr. Descamps safety deposit
box at the Chamber of Commerce
building. The contents of the box
eav no clew.
Mr. Moumal, accompanied by Dep
uty Sheriff Christofferson and C
Henri Labbe, attorney for Mr. Des
camps. went to Beaverton to make
another - examination of the farm
home, but nothing was found which
might aid in accounting for the dis
appearance. The police last night received in
formation to the effect that three men
in a Buick automobile had left the
section of the man's body near Ken
ton. A pedestrian, who declined to
give his name, said he saw them drive
to the spot where the fragments of
flesh were found, and stop by the
roadside. The machine bore no li
cense number and had no lights. The
pedestrian thought the autoists were
highwaymen about to rob him.
The police were thrown into a fu
rore of excitement last nipht by a
report that someone in a small auto
mobile had been seen to throw more
bundles over the Union-avenue bridge
into the gulch where the first section
of the body were found. The excite
ment was dispelled by the discovery
that the bundles contained weefstea
