Coarse Grain Markets Are Slow.
Corn Is Steady and Sacked
Oats Weaker.
With the ubsldr.nre of the eastern de
mand for -wheat, buying for account of
coast mills baa also fallen off. Dealers
yesterday found it almost impossible to In
tel est buyers either here or on the sound
at the recent prices, as mills at both
places are carrying liberal supplies of
wheat. Because of the slacking up of
trade, farmers who recently held out are
showing more disposition to find a mar
ket. At Minneapolis yesterday cash wheat
was quoted & cents higher.
Only about 40,000.000 bushels of Can
ada's exportable 100,000.000 bushels of the
1919 wheat crop have been shipped across
the Atlantic so far. according to H. W.
Woods, the Alberta member of the domin
ion wheat board. Mr. Wool states that with
the American market open, obviously a
good deal of Canadian wheat will find its
ar across the international border, ana
ma the trans-Atlantic shipments will be
itrt accordingly. It may reasonably be as
sumed that the opening of the American
market will add from $8,000,000 to $10.
000,000 to the Canadian farmers' receipts
for their 3!M9 wheat above wtoat they
would have obtained before the embargo
was lifted, Mr. Wood says.
Tho loal coarse grain market was slow.
Corn was steady and 23u0c higher on
bid at the Merchants' Exchange. Sacked
oats bids were reduced 50c. There was
no demand for northwestern barley, and
bids' for eastern barley were reduced to
68S8.50.
Very few sales of grain bags have been
reported lately. The market is nominal at
about 11 cents.
Weather conditions in the middle west,
as wired from Chicago: "Northern Illinois
sleeting' and cold. All othors in grain belt
cloudy and cold. Forecast All fair and
cold weather predicted."
Termiral receipts, in ears, were report
ed by tho Merchants' Exchange as fol
lows: Wheat. Bar. Fir. Oats. Hay.

wheat flour" of equal value for baking

brands referred to above It is contended
by many, however, that for domestic use
In the actual baking of pies and cakes, the
gcvernment flour is actually superior to
the higher-priced varieties. Bakers are
using United States grain corporation
"standard pure wheat flour" In propor
tions of from 23 per cent to 40 per cent
in mixtures and maintaining their quality
of bread at a very substantial saving in
cost.
"In regard to placing of the govern
ment flour in the hands of small con
sumers, the grain corporation programme
is meeting with much greater success than
was at first anticipated. Orders are being
doptluated more rapidly than they can be
filled. Housewives in all parts of the
country are writing to Wheat Director
Barnes, who inaugurated the flour sale
as a direct attack on the high cost of
living expressing their satisfaction at be
ing able to purchase such a good flour at
such a reasonable price."
The Portland office of the grain corpo
ration makes the following announce
ment: This grade of flour Is being quoted in
less than carload lots by Pacific coast
mills In cotton quarters at a range of
price from $10.53 per barrel to $10.7O, and
bv many of the Interior mills at less prices.
and on the usual trade terms. Any pur-
chrser unable to obtain a supply will be
placed In touch, by the local office of the
grain corporation, with the nearest avail
able mill. The grain corporation is pre
pared to sell direct in carload lots at $10.23
per barrel in 140-pound jutes, freight pre
