-. - 14 THE MORNING OREGOXIAN, MONDAY, ' DECEMBER i. 1919. COPRA MILL LIKELY 10 BE REBUILT HERE Destruction by Fire May Re sult in Larger Plant. SALVAGE TO BE VIEWED Possibility of Saving Part of Ma chinery in Soap Oil Reiinery Foreseen; Output to Grow. Construction of a new copra mill, with a capacity at least two and one half times that of the plant destroyed Saturday, will probably be the out growth of the destructive fire at the local branch of the Palmolive com pany, according to the announcement made by C. A. Palnton. local manager, last night. Construction of the plant will likely begin within a short time, but it will be at least six months be fore the special machinery needed in the reduction of copra can be ob tained, it was stated. The plant here was originated as the Kaola company, but was taken over about two years ago by the Palmolive concern. It continued to be operated as a separate concern un til last July when It was reorganized as the western branch of the great tfoap concern. The mill destroyed Saturday had a capacity of 40 tons a day. The proc ess consisted in reducing copra, the dried meat of the cocoanut, to cocoa nut oil. The new mill will have a rapacity of at least 100 tons a day, in the belief of Mr. Palnton. The raw product is received from the orient and the south sea Islands, and Port land Is considered to be an ideal loca tion for a western branch in view of the direct shipping connections with these points. Mr. Palnton returned 10 days ago from Milwaukee, headquarters of the Palmolive company, and during his visit at headquarters plans for a new plant here were discussed, he ac knowledged. It was considered at that time that an addition to the pres ent structure would be built next fall, but the destruction of the plant here Saturday may hasten the action. Al though Mr. Palnton notified the com pany fully of the disaster he had re ceived no definite news regarding fu ture plans up to last night. It is considered probable that the new plant will be erected upon a dif ferent site, as it Is known that of ficials of the company have been con sidering the purchase of additional property In Portland. President Caleb E. Johnson of the Palmolive company was in the city a year ago and looked over a number of available sites at that time, bu. no action was taken. Whether the machinery and equip- . ment within the plant will be a total i wreck or whether a part of it can be 1 salvaged had not been determined last night. Mr. Palnton and other officials of the company spent several hours yesterday on the property but were unable to get inside the building, as fires were still smoldering and fire men on the scene were throwing streams of water to prevent any pos sible outbreak of the flames. As soon as possible the machinery will be removed and inspected with a view to saving and repairing as much of it as possible. Oil pressing ma chinery such as is uced by the plant is manufactured at only a few points in the east and cannot be obtained in the west at all. This fact led Manager Painton to fear that it would be six months at least before new machinery can be supplied and the plant again placed in operation on a large scale. DAILY METEOROLOGICAL. REPORT.
