THE MORNING OREGONIAN, TUESDAY, NOVEMBER 4, 1919. 5 STRIKING Mil fffj FACE LOW TREASURY "Vacation" Planned Begins to Look Dubious. PUBLIC OPINION AROUSED threats of General Walkouts Not Kerioufely Taken In Capital; Al lies ol 31incrs Penalized. Charles C. Hart Is in charge of The Ore- rnnian News Bureau in Wasnington. His office is at 822 Klggs building. OREGONIAN NEWS BUREAU, "Washington, Nov. 3. Another day is expected to tell something' of the outcome of the coal strike. The "va cation" which the miners had planned has been marred by the sudden dis covery that the strike fund, on which they expected to enjoy a season of Idleness while the public was en during the first chills of winter. Is tied up. Thi3 had not been fore seen. Now the question Is, shall the miner starve or the public freeze? The miner must answer. Threats of general strikes are not taken seriously, because one only has to listen briefly to the great leaders of organized labor in Wash ington now to discern that they ap preciate that public opinion is aroused, as never before. W. Winkler in 1893, filed in the cir cuit court yesterday. Two years ago while living on a farm she "heard a commotion in the barnyard" and upon investigation found her husband was very angry with her pet cow. When she spoke to the animal "in friendly manner," Winkler flew into a rage, called her vile names and threw a monkey wrench at her, she declares. tine left him soon after. Robert T. Cornell, in answer to the allegations of a divorce complaint filed recently in the circuit court by Fannie J. Cornell, declares that his wife was very untidy, never washing dishes unless they were needed to eat from, and allowing pots and pans to rust, throwing them, away to avoid cleaning them. She neglected their two babies and was often intoxicated, he alleges. Divorce complaints yesterday in cluded: Louis Boget against Nell'e Boget. John Walter King against Lema R. King, William Archie against Bessie L. Archie, and C. G. Krogh against Edith Elizabeth Krogh. JURY GETS CLARK CASE PROSECUTION" OVER . SLAYING OP C. Ii. TAYLOR ENDS. Miners Penalize Allies. It Is discovered also that the miners have unwittingly penalized their faithful allies, the railroad brother hoods. As a result of the strike nu merous trains have been canceled and many train crews find themselves out of employment. Interest now awaits the answer which Governor Sproul of Pennsylva nia is expected to make in the next few hours to the threat of a state wide strike. If the Pennsylvania gov ernor comes back with a firm reply It is likely to be taken as the cue for the federal government to stiffen its policy. There has been public dis saisfaction with Attorney-General Palmer's statements because some of them are said to be apologetic be tween the lines. Re nreuared to wake up some morn ing soon and read on the first page of your newspaper that the peace treaty has been ratified. It iB coming, like a thief in the night. Responsibility Is Shifted. Anyway, that was the prediction .round the senate this afternoon fal lowing the failure of that body to reach an agreement to take an early vote. The attitude of Senator Hitchcock of Nebraska, administra tion leader, this afternoon, in oppos Ing the Lodge unanimous consent pro posal for a vote, shifts responsibility unmistakably to the shoulders of the administration. The administration, having told the country for so many weeks that the republicans were de laying action, will not rest long under the blame for further delay. Senator Lodge's suggestion offered something tangible, while fhe Hitch cock proposal was so indefinite as to smack of bad faith, in the opinion of republican senators. To a few democratic senators it was admitted ly a mystery. His efforts to force a two-thirds vote on the reservations was denounced as silly, and some even stronger language was applied. Senator Lodge Insistent. Of course the reservationist3 will K Join any minute with the irreconcil able republicans to defeat any such a. proposition as that. -The reserva tions will be put on by a majority vote under the rules of the senate, as Senator Lodge said, and will be adopted in such a way that they will have to be accepted by Mr. Hitch cock and his followers in order to ratify. The Hitchcock move was merely a play for time, to permit negotiation with the mild reservationists, but that day is gone. The continued aloofness of the administration leaders has served only to unite the republican senators of all shades, and the attitude of the reservation ists is best summed in the words of Senator McNary, who. when asked the other day if his group would make any overtures to Hitchcock, said "If a man kicked you out of his house would you go back begging him to take you in. again? Day of Compromise Fast. The day of compromise is over, and the end is likely to come when it looks most remote. It was freely predicted this afternoon that a "blow up" may be anticipated any minute because it was evident today that everybody but Hitchcock is tired of the delay. Senator Lodge expressed the senti ments of the majority when he said: "I want this treaty voted either up or down. Political Washington disliked today to discuss anything but the elections tomorrow in Massachusetts, New Jer sey, Maryland and Kentucky. Chief interest attaches now to the results in New Jersey and Maryland, where democratic success appears to have been practically assured by the presi dent's veto of the prohibition bill. In New Jersey prohibition is the only issue, and the democrats are standing squarely against it. Since congress passed the prohibi tion enforcement act over Mr. Wil son's veto the democrats have made good use of the fact that congress is controlled by the republican plirty The same veto appears to have swung the city of Baltimore strongly into line for the democratic ticket. republicans privately admit, and Bal limore will decide the election in Maryland. A national cemetery cannot be es tablished at Camp Lewis, Wash., even with the authority of congress, ""with out jeopardizing the title given to the government by Pierce county, the judge advocate-general of the army has ruled, according to a war depart nient announcement today. Many pe titions had been received urging that such a cemetery be established. Five additional post lights for the aid of navigation have been ordered established in the Coquiile river above Prosper. Or., the department of commerce advised Senator jlcNary today., to operate annually between October 15 and April 15. Extension of rural mail route No. 1. EUGENE, Or., Nov. 3. (Special.) L. L. Ray, prosecuting attorney, at 3;40 o'clock today launched his ad dress to the jury in the trial of Mar tin Clark, charged with the murder of Charles L. Taylor in the moun tains above McKenzie bridge, last summer. The evidence, Ray told the jury, should be considered from the standpoint of only two questions: "Did the defendant kill Taylor?" and, "if so, how and under what circum stances?" The district-attorney then proceed ed to picture anew the scenes of the hunt and the killing, and wove the chain of circumstantial evidence by which the state has endeavored to prove the guilt of Clark. He told how the two hunters had separated to hunt back to camp, how Clark sig naled Taylor after Taylor had killed a deer, and then how Taylor had been shot down while in a screen of brush. Mr. Ray then spoke of Clark's ac tions in not volunteering to make a search for Taylor. When Clark did go out, according to the district-attorney, he went in the wrong direc tion to find Taylor. Testimony showed, said the district-attorney, that when Clark arrived at the scene of the finding of the head of the deer that had been killed by Taylor, and this had narrowed the field of search, Clark endeavored to lead the search ing party away from the spot where the body was afterward found. The peculiar markings on shells fired from Clark'a rifle was dwelt upon at length. "-v 1J0HN M'CORKLE IS DEAD Native of Cowlitz Since 1859 Sur vived fcy Four Children. LEXINGTON, Wash., Nov. 3. These are the plain facts : The Pacific International Livestock Exposition is the most important event for Portland that has been attempted since the great Lewis & Clark Exposition in 1905. It will be a permanent asset. It will carry the fame of this section east and west and north and south. It will bring thousands of visitors and hundreds of thousands of dollars to the city of Portland and the entire Pacific Northwest every year. It will make this city pre-eminently the livestock center of the west. It will, according to Mr. W. B. Ayer, mean more to Portland than the Alaska trade means to Seattle. This great Exposition is assured; the construction is under way. NOTE The packing-house interests own no stock and have no members upon the Board of Directors of the Pacific Inter national Livestock Exposition. On the other hand, the pack ing interests, without a cent in return, gave to the Exposition the grounds, valued at $75,000, upon which the buildings are being constructed. 2000 livestock entries have been booked ; 886 more entries have been requested than can be cared for, and yet the Exposition Building is the largest of its kind in the world ! $300,000 has already been expended on actual construction. To complete the financing of the building and to care for the entries properly TO FINISH THE JOB requires that $100,000 more of stock be sold, $50,000 of which was subscribed last week. Pride Calls Upon You to Subscribe Your Quota When the salesman calls, greet him by subscribing for stock in proportion to your individual pride in Portland's leadership and your own financial interest in selling Portland to the country. Sales Committees of the Portland Ad Club, the Portland Chamber of Commerce, The Kiwanis Club, the Portland Realty Board and the Progressive Business Men's Club are still on the job.
