Mr. J.F.Myers Mar. toft or labor leUTB Vast Stands of Spruce and Hemlock Suitable for Commerce Are Found on Inspection. Forest inspection trips through the Tongasa national fores,t of Alas ka are far different from the same tours in Oregon or Washington re serves, according to A. J. Jaenicke, forest examiner, who has Just re turned from the northern woods. The Tongasa. he explains, is in the southeastern part of the peninsula, which is made up largely of small islands, and rangers travel through them on motorboats provided by the government. Kach man has from one and a half to four and a half million acres under his supervision. whereas in the states there are two or three rangers to each million acres. Mr. Jaenicke spent two months in Alaska examining spruce and hem lock, which had been attacked by an insect. These trees had lost their needles as though a fire had been through the great tracts. Inspec tion proved that the pest would probably move on each year and would do no great damage," few of the trees'being killed by it. ' Timber in the Tongass, Mr. Jaen icke believes, will noun be valuable for paper ' pulp and he anticipates great activity In this line within a few years, as the supply in the United States is getting low. At pres ent timber is being used principally for fish traps, piling and wharves. There are 15.000.000 acres in the Tongass, having 70.000.000,000 board feet, 65 per cent of which is hemlock and 20 per cent spruce. There are small quantities of red cedar and yellow cypress. case against Jacob Glickman. a fur niture peddler, who was charged with having liquor in his possession. thrown out of the municipal court on the ground that the federal liquor law took precedence and placed all liquor cases under the jurisdiction of the federal court Judge Rossman overruled the de murrer and fined Glickman $75.
