18 THE "MORNING OREGONIAN, FRIDAY, SEPTE3IBER 20, 1919. MINISTERS ARE TRIED! KEY". MR. MOWREY IIEI-D TO HAVE HARBORED COREAXS. Japanese Suspend Jail Sentence; Rev. Mr. Bell, in Fatal Acci dent, Is l'ined. "WASHINGTON, Sept. 25. A state department report of ttie trials last April of the Rev. Eli M. Mowrey, a Presbyterian missionary, for harbor ing Coreans engaged in anti-Japanese propaganda, and of Rev. Kugene Bell for careless driving of an automobile which resulted in a fatal accident, has been transmitted to the senate by the White House. The Rev. .Mr. Mowrey. the report fald, had a trial of "reasonable fair ness," and, it was stated, committed a '"serious oversight" in failing to seek a continuance of his trial. Sen tence of four months' imprisonment was suspended. From the report of American Am bassador Morris at Tokio. the state department communication declared, "the evidence may be construed as sufficient to allow the inference that Mr. Mowrey did unlawfully harbor five young Coreans, who, he 'guesses,' hut did not actually know, were flee ing from the police." American authorities, it was stated, took every precaution to secure the missionary's rights. Regarding Rev. Mr. Bell, the report said a fine of 50 yen was imposed under a Japanese law penalizing driv ers of vehicles in which a death oc curs in an accident. No appeal was taken. SHOCK Corea, Aug. 26. (Corre spondence of the Associated Press.) Coreans have raised a fund of the equivalent of $5000 for the defense of the leaders of the insurrection who will be tried this autumn. Efforts will be made to secure the services of some well-known foreign lawyer. The preliminary trial of a number of lead ing agitators of the city of Sachon re sulted in the death sentence for nine and life imprisonment for six others. An appeal was taken. BURLESON DENIES CHARGE los.linaster-Gciieral Avers Civil Service Law Is Respected. WASHINGTON. Sept. 25. Denial that anv effort had been made by the postoffice department to influence the civil service commission in the rating of eligible appointees for postmasters of first, second and third-class offices is maiN' uv Postmaster-General Burle son in a letter to Speaker Gillett. On the contrary, the department, he asserted, has observed "at all times in letter and in spirit," the presiden tial order for the certification of the candidate with the highest rating. JEWS END REUNION TODAY i Rabbi Wise to Speak at New Year Services This Morning. The services of Rosh Ilashana, the Jewish New Year, which has been ob served the past two days by the con gregations of Portland synagogues, will end today.
