'They Bake Better' BANDITS ATTACK GUAYMAS CHILD RILLED ; TROOPS BKAT OFF MARAUDERS. Mexican Federal Escort Hereafter to Accompany All Trains in Danger Zone. NOGALES, Ariz., Aug. 14. Maraud ers numbering about 200 and said to be Yaaui Indians last Sunday attacked a FUtmrb of Guaymas, one of the prin cipal towns on the western coast of Mexico, and killed one child, according to travelers arriving today from iiuaymas. Troops from the Mexican federal gar rison pursued the maurauders, killing eight and wounding three. Commencing tomorrow, it was an nounced today by Mexican officials at Nogales. Sonora, across the interna tional boundary from here, escorts of federal troops will accompany all trains running from Nogales to Guaymas. Mexican federal officials have warned Americans traveling through dangerous sections to apply for an escort of troops which, it is promised, will be furnished them. This statement regarding con ditions in Sonora was made today by Francis J. Dyer. American consul at Nogales. Sonora. "General Klias Calles. governor of Sonora, has informed me that the Mex ican authorities are taking every pre caution to protect American citizens from marauding Yaqui Indians. But he observes that there is too general a tendency by both Mexicans and for eigners to take unnecessary chances. The governor desires that Americans who have occasion to visit and travel in the state of Sonora and who may find themselves under the necessity of visiting localities in which the hostile Indians are active, shall make applica tion for a. military escort. This will not be a difficult matter. General Callet says, and forethought to secure pro tection may prevent disagreeable consequences." Kolchak Retreat Scouted. HONOLT-'LTT, T. H., Aug. 14. (Spe cial.) Bound for Siberia to continue his work as chief executive of the American Red Cross there. Colonel R. B. Teusler passed through here a few days ago. He scouted the story that KoicnacK was oeing oeaien oy xno bolshevik! forces and that the Si berian administrator was preparing to move from Omsk- LOWER STEEL RATE GOAL COAST SHIPBUILDERS OPEX VIG OROUS CAMPAIGX. Pacific Northwest Hard Hit by Ad vances in Freight Charges From Atlantic Points. An energetic campaign has been started by the Pacific coast shipbuild ers in support of their petition for re duced rates on steel across the conti nent. Their traffic association has se cured adoption by the San Francisco and Oakland chambers- of commerce of resolutions indorsing the movement. and has agreed that full information be sent to all senators and representa tives from this territory. Committees have been appointed to seek indorse ment by the labor unions. This in formation is contained in a telegram received by Steve Whitney, vice-chairman for the Columbia river district, from R. L. Bishop, chairman of the as sociation. Pacific eoast shipbuilders have been hit harder by the advances in freight rates during the last few years than has probably any other industry. From May 1. 1916, to December 30. 1916. rates on steel to the Pacific coast were 75 cents from the Atlantic coast, 65 cents from Pittsburg and 55 cents from Chicago. The general advance of 2 5 per cent on June 25. 1918, by the railroad ad ministration brought the rates up to the present figures of $1.37 from the Atlantic coast and 51.25 from Pitts burg. The railroad administration has made an export rate of 60 cents from the Atlantic to the PacUic coast and the rate across the Pacific ocean to Shanghai and Kobe is 60 cents, a total of $1-20, or less than . the rate from Pittsburg to the Pacific coast. Such was the information received yesterday by Peter B. Mcintosh, city purchasing agent, from Fred A. Thomp son, major, quartermaster corps. Fort Mason, who advises that application for 36.000 cans be maae to Libby, Mc Neill & L.ibby. warehouse No. 31. City Commissioner Pier has sent the neces sary application and it is believed the shipment will reach here some time next week unless something unforeseen develops. LIBRARIANS T0 SEE EAST Miss Marvin anil Party to Make Study of Orient. SALEM, Or., Aug. 14. (Special.) Miss Cornelia Marvin, state librarian; Miss Mary Stuart Foster, reference librarian of the historical eoc'ety of Wisconsin, and Miss Jessica Todd, dean of the Monmouth normal school, will sail from Seattle about October 10 for the orient, where they will make a study of conditions. It is the present plan of the women to spend about five months in travel fng and it is their intention to visit Japan, Corea, Manchuria. China. Java, the Philippine islands and the Hawai ian islands. Although application al ready has been made for transporta ion, it was with some difficulty that the party were able to ge accommoda tions as early as October. Miss Marvin has traveled quite ex tensively and during; the winters of 1909 and 1910 spent some time In Italy and other parts of Europe. She be lieves her trip to the orient will aid her materially In handling the duties of state librarian. BETTER PROTECTION URGED Movement to Reorganize Albany Fire Department Started. ALBANY. Or., Aug. 14. (Special.) Steps were taken at the meeting of the city council Wednesday evening toward reorganization of the Albany fire de partment and the purchase of addi tional modern fire-fighting apparatus. The committee on fire and water was authorized to investigate the cost of a motor pumper of large capacity and to consider plans for the. complete re organization of the department. The city has been considering the purchase of another motor-truck, but action was hastened at this time by the visit here of George W. Stokaa. chief deputy state fire marshal, and Deputy H. H. Pomery of Salem. After spending two days in the city they recommended the purchase of a large motor pumper and suggested the em ployment of a paid chief. Read The Oregonian classified ads.
