8HORT ALASKA PACK IS REPORTED
Poorest SeaMin for Salmon Canners in 30
Years, It Is Said.
James Durney, an authority on salmon,
predicts a very short pack and high prices
on Alaska fish. In a trade circular he
fcays;
"Advices from practica'.ly every canner
operating iu Bristol bay are to the effect
that the run i.s over and the pack of salmon
is the poorest in 3 years. Some packers
have put up less than 30 per cent of the
quantity they packed last year. One or two
hae been a little more successful and have
packed about 50 per cent, but taking re
ports as a whole, it looks as though the total
pack of Alaska red balmon in Bristol bay
tills year will not be over 40 per cent of
tho pack of 101 S. -i f the pack had been
normal and we had filled our cans it would
have cost all the way from cents to $1
a case more to pack this year than it did
la:t. With the fhort pack, the cost is
naturally greatly Increased. Very few, if
any, of the canners can get out without a
I os. even if tho price of Alaska red is $3
f. o. b. coast."

The date of the fall fur sale at St. Louis

The strong demand for furs of practically

arc probably the sma'.lcst ever known in
the history of the trad". The Russian gov

m the shipment of furs out of Russia, whi

STOCK ' MARKET REVERSES
COURSE AFTER OPEMXC
Setback Ascribed to Stronger Tone
of Money Rates and Unfavor
able Labor Conditions.
NEW Y'ORIC, Aug. 11. Stocks were strong
at the opening of today's session. Indications
pointing to a continuance of the rally which
accompanied the final days of last week,
but the market soon reversed its course and
closed with mixed gains and losses.
reasons for the setback were based in part
on the stronger tone of the money market
and further unsatisfactory labor conditions.
Call loans opened at 0 to 6' per cent, tho
nigner rates whieh prevailed virtuallv
throughout today probably being caused in
part by last Saturday's bank statement
which disclosed a moderately heavy loss in
cash reserves.
The chock to business at Imnnrtanf wtt.
ern and southwestern sections was attributed
less to me nigh cost crusade than to fur
ther ttrike developments. which more
seriously affected the shipment to marked of
raw materials.
Heaviness in United States Steel, which
fell 2 points from its blight initial advance,
was ascribed, for want of a more convincing
reason, tn the deatli of Andrew Carnegie,
but that theory found few supporters in the
financial district-
Alore b tabic conditions ruled In foreign
exchange, the French rate hardening with a
steadier tone for sterling, but Italian re
mittances suffered another slump.
Firmness attended the restricted dealings
in bonds, although internationals were
slightly lower. Total sales, par value, ag
gregated $0,350,000. Old United States bonds
were unchanged.

It will be noted that the amounts available for dividends on this preferred stock for the year ending June 30, 1919,
after paying . all interest charges "of every description as well as taxes, including Federal Income Tax, all operation main
tenance costs and depreciation, are over seven times the amount required. In other words, the dividends are secured by
surplus earnings of $834,000.
Attention is called to the large surplus earnings for the past three years. These figures also show most satisfactory
increases. Surplus earnings available for the preferred stock dividend have averaged for the past six years about six
times the required amount.
VALUE OF PROPERTY
The investment in the operating properties of the Great Western system, in a report made by independent engineers
and submitted by the Company to the Railroad Commission of California, was placed as of June 30, 1918, at $39,252,000.
In the same report the cost of the undeveloped property is shown to be approximately $12,000,000. Therefore $50,000,000
may be taken to be a conservative value for the existing properties of the Great Western system.
PURPOSE OF THE ISSUE
This $1,500,000 preferred stock is issued to defray a portion of the expense in the construction of the company's new
Caribou development, which will produce as soon as completed an additional 53,000 H. P.
The foregoing figures do not take into consideration increased values or the earning capacity of this new development.
This stock is issued with the approval of the Railroad Commission of the State of California.
For further information reference is made to a letter of Mr. Mortimer Fleishhacker. President of the Company,
which will be supplied upon request.
We recommend this stock as an investment.
