THE MORXIXG OBEGOXIAX, 3IOXDAT, AUGUST 11, 1919 11 IS HERE I SMALL BOY HAPPY Wild Animals Take Places Under 20 Acres of Canvas. PARADE AT 10 A. M. TODAY Human Birds to Cavort in Air. While Elephant "Tramples' on Man; Everything Is "for People." The Carl Hagenbeck-Wallace circus la in Portland for four performances afternoon and evening of today and to morrow. Weather favored the small boy, and hundreds were on hand to watch the show unload and see canvas rise on 20 acres on the show grounds at Twenty fifth and Raleijarh streets. From the time the first train arrived until the last animal had ben installed in his temporary home there was great ex citement among- the youngsters. Grown ups, too, availed themselves of the opportunity to get a glance at the strange beasts In the big menagerie. Unloading of the big Hagenbeck "Wallace show was no small job, for two big shows were combined, and the world-famous Ha gen beck animals, to gether with those of the Wallace show, comprise a gathering of more wild animals under on?) ent than can be seen again in maiy a day. Every car on each section of the circus special is packed to its capacity with para phernalia. Parade at lO A. M. Today. The circu-s parade, which will begin promptly at 10 o'clock this morning, has been highly praised by the press at all places the show has visited this season. The line of march is as fol lows: Starting point. Twenty-fifth and Overton, thence to Twentieth, to Wash ington, to Nineteenth, to Alder, to Third, to Burnside, to Sixth, to Ever ett, to Twenty-second, to Petty grove and from there to the show grounds. The afternon performance will be gin at 2 o'clock, although the entrance to the main tent and menagerie will open an hour earlier. The evening show will begin at 8 o'clock, with opening at 7. This will give all an opportunity to visit the menagerie. Thrilling Acts tinted. Among some of the features of the show are: Fifty-five clowns, said to be top notchers of their profession; two lion acts, both of them thrillers and of the kind which make people gasp. Half a dozen elephant acts, in one of which a huge pachyderm lies down across the form of his trainer, while four others place their front feet on the back of their big comrade and hold a pow-wow over him and the man beneath. It takes a keen eye to see that the big fellow has carefully left about tialf an inch of space between himself and his keeper, it appears as if the man would be crushed. "The highest jumping horse in the world" is with the show. Carrying a young lady on his back he negotiates the nine-foot hurdles as easily and gracefully as if they were but two feet in height. Another horse, a magnifi cent stallion driven to a frail buggy in which a young woman drives, walks on his hind feet, holding his forefeet high above his head, ' lies down, bows to the audience and does many other clever tricks. Human Birds to Kly. Added to these are the sensational aerial acts, trapeze performers, tight and slack rope walkers, and three little girls who, after they have performed on the wire, slide from the top of the tent to the ground, one girl on one foot, -another on her shoulder, and another on her head. The latter is closely fol lowed by a young man who really and truly does a "dip of death." One of the prettiest scenes is said to be that of the human birds and butterflies, who fiy about. There are 200 acts in all, and they Include everything from the best that can be obtained In the amusement world. It will be Portland's first op portunity of the season to see a real circus. I). S.
