U. S. Chamber of Commerce
Directors to Confer.
PROGRAMME IS ARRANGED
Portland Business Men Plan De
termined Effort to Get 102 0 Con
vention of Organization.
A party of 27 directors and attaches
of the United States Chamber of Com
merce, whose visit is potent with com
mercial possibilities for Portland, is
scheduled to arrive here today. In a
letter received by the Portland Cham
ber of Commerce from the St. Louis
commercial body, it is said that in the
last opinion of burliness men of that
city greater benefit was derived from
the last annual session of the United
States chamber held in that city than
from the Louisiana Purchase exposi
tion of 1904.
The directors of. the national civic
body are making their present trip in
part to decide upon the meeting- place
for the 1920 session of the organization,
and partly to make a study of the com
mercial situation of the Pacific coast
cities and important trade and manu
facturing centers of the western states.
Alert business men of this city are
taking a lively interest in the coming
of the delegation.
Today at noon representative business
men of the city will meet and hear
the visitors at the noon luncheon of
the Chamber of Commerce. It will be
-one of the notable gatherings of the
business men, for the directors of the
national body include leaders in va
rious commercial and trade activities.
Homer L. Ferguson, president of the
chamber, is the president of the New
port News Shipbuilding company and is
one of the great naval construction en
gineers of the country. He was for
merly located in Portland, supervising
the building of two torpedo boats built
at the Wolff & Zwicker yard in the
late '90s, and was among the captains
of Industry whose counsel was sought
in important affairs of the govern
ment during the war period. The New
port News companay built a number of
big vessels for the United States gov
ernment. Many CHiea Represented.

mittee and vice-president of the United
States chamber of commerce; John Roy
Edson, treasurer; D. A. Skinner, assist

-Committee to Meet GnrMn.
The visitors will be met at the union
station this morning by a committee
of the Portland Chamber of Commerce,
headed by President Corbett, which
will be accompanied by Governor Ben
W. Olcott and Mayor George L. Baker.
After breakfast at the Hotel Portland
the party will spend the forenoon in
a trip about the industrial plants of
Portland. At noon a public reception
will be held at the rooms of the Port
land Chamber of Commerce, preceding
the noon luncheon, which several hun
dred business men will attend.
Invitations for the 1920 session of
the United States chamber of com
merce to meet in this city will be ex
tended by Governor Olcott, Mayor
Baker and Pr-esident Corbett will pre
side at the luncheon and speak on be
hajf of the local body. A. C. Callan,
chairman of the delegation that at
tended the 1919 session at St. Louis,
will present the reasons why Portland
should receive favorable consideration
and be designated for the next annual
meeting of the national organization.
Mr. Griffith to Speak.
Franklin T. Griffith, president of the
Portland Railway, Light & Power com
pany, will formally present to the na
tional officers a bound volume of
photographs and Masons that should
be considered in deciding the issue on
behalf of the local organization.
Among the early arrivals to parti
cipate in the conferences here wer-s J.
E. Chilberg of Seattle and Frederick
Koster of San Francisco, members of
the directorate from the Pacific coast
cities, who arrived yesterday and will
remain with the party for the re
mainder of its Pacific coast itinerary.
BRITAIN AFTER PROFITEERS
Central Authority to Be Established
Tor Purpose, Says Oeddes.
LOTDON. Auar. 6. Great Britain pur
roses establishing a central authority
to deal with profiteering, it was an
nounced by Sir Auckland Geddes, min
ister of reconstruction, at the resump
tion today of the hearings by the house
of commons, sitting? as a select com
mittee to inquire into the high cost of
living and profiteering.
Sir Auckland said this central au
thority, according to the government's
plan, would be associated with local
and county tribunals. New powers
would be asked for in connection with
the project and an increase in penalties
for violations put into effect.

Lieutenant O. R. Kennon, former mem
ber of Company M, 162d infantry, re
turned to Salem yesterday after 20
months spent in France. He also
served in the United States forces on
the Mexican border. w
Feeble-Minded Lad Escapes.

.William Balrd, aged 14 years, escaped
from the feeble-mnided school this
morning. He is sought by officials of
the institution.
Salem Elects Craig to Council.

Robert Craig has been elected a mem
ber of the Salem city council to suc
ceed J. S. Austin, who submitted his
resignation to Mayor Otto Wilson sev
eral days ago.
TREES SUPPLANT VINES
Largest Vineyard In World to Be
come Fruit and Xnt Ranch.
ONTARIO, CaL What is claimed to
be the largest vineyard in the world,
owned by Segundo Guasti Jr.. of Los
Angeles, and located a few miles north
of here, has been converted into a fruit
ranch. The 4000-aere tract of land will
be irrigated and set out to walnut and
fruit trees,, according to Mr. Guasti,
who recentl yannounced the completion
of the sinking of four wells on the
ranch and the construction of a reser
voir with a capacity of 13,000.000 gal
lons. More than a year ago. In anticipation
of prohibition, trees were set out amon

the wine grapes on the land. Now these
grapes are being taken out entirely.
