THE MORXIXG OREGOXIAX, WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 6, 1919. ZEPPELIN INTERESTS -SEE BIG FIELD HERE Engineers Reported Anxious to Visit America. AIRSHIP BUILDING OBJECT Germans, fit Is Said, Would Seek -J Financial Backing for Enter prises in This Country. BY JOSEPH W GRIGG. (Copyright by the New York World. Pub lished by Arrangement.) LONDON, Aug. 5. With the ratifica tion of peace and the resumption of re lations with Germany there is every possibility that some of the chief Zep pelin engineers and designers will make an effort to reach America and there try to enlist big financial back ing for the development or rigid air ships in the United States. The correspondent of The "World has learned that feelers have been put out in this direction. These Zeppelin build ers feel that America will make a bid for aerial supremacy over England, and that America, rather than- Germany, will offer the greatest opportunities in the construction of rigid airships in the next decade. British Interest Arooned. There have been other reports to the effect that interests in the big steel works in Germany would try to obtain financial control of the Zeppe lin works, but so far they lack con firmation. All the indications in this country are that the development and perfec tion of aerial liners will go forward with persistent energy. This is seen I in plans for the voyage of the R-33 for , Cairo, whence she may proceed to In dia. Use of airplanes in connection with these liners is under serious consid eration. Both here and in America it has been found practicable for air hips to carry airplanes, which may be released in a nose dive at a height of several thousand feet if the pro pellers and the engines are started before the release. There has been a suggestion that the R.-33- be thus equipped when she goes to Cairo, and that the airplane will carry the mails. Before the trip east ward the R-33 may make a trial run to Spain and back, while the R-34 will undergo general overhauling at East Fortune. A commission representing the. allied and associated powers is to go to Ger many after the ratification of peace by the three powers, and to inspect there the Zeppelins and other airships, as well as the seaplanes, before their surrender, in accordance with the peace terms. The commission will in clude two American naval representa tives and probably an army expert. BLRD-SCRFACIXG CONTRACT IS LET BY VANCOUVER COUNCIL.
