'JAZZ' AND PEP HELD NEED
Maurice Ju. Rothschild of Chicago
Hectares Great Opportunities
Abound for EBusiness.
TVhy on earth don't you Portland
people let the world know about your
town. You've pot everything in the
world to dray people to your doors, but
you let the facts remain unknown. You
let the other fellows out-advertise you."
So declared Maurice L. Rothschild,
millionaire merchant of Chicago, last
nis?ht upon his return from a trip over
the Columbia highway as a jruest of
Julius L. Meier, general manager of
the .Meier 7 Frank company store. Mr.
Kothschild stopped off in Portland Fri
day on his way to California to see Mr.
Meier, an old friend. Mr. Rothschild is
the proprietor of two clothing stores in
Chicajro, a store in St. Paul and another
in Minneapolis, and is reputed to handle
the la rsrest supply of retail clothes of
ar.y merchant in the world. lie departed
2art niht for San Francisco.
It was a picture of tremendous re
sources and advantages allowed to go
unheralded to the world which Mr.
Rothschild depicted last night, as he
told of his impressions of Portland. He
had been deeply impressed by the city
and its surroundings, he said, and he
let his mind rest for a few minutes
upon the picture of Portland being ad
vertised as a gigantic commercial or
ganization to draw its quota of tourists
anJ capitalists.
Portland fedn "Jazz."
"Tou have everything right at your
door," he declared. "You have the sum
mer climate of Norway, the mountain
scenery of Switzrland, you have a na
tural location for commerce, you have
gigantic resources for business, you
have a highway that is second to none
in the world. All Portland needs is a
good big supply of 'jazz People do
not know about you. They go to Seat
tle and to San Francisco, but they pass
you by. Let the world know about
yourselves.
"I have traveled the Cornish road
from Naples to Pompeii, almost uni
versally called the greatest highway in
the world, but 1 can seriously say that
that worid wonder has nothing what
ever on the Columbia highway. Your
highway is a magnificent piece of
work amid works of nature which go
almost unmatched on the globe. Ad
vertise it more."
"With the opening of the Panama ca
nal. Portland should develop into a
greater milling center than Minneap
olis, the Chicago merchant said. Me also
foresaw a big business for the lumber
Industry of this section, declaring that
soon the whole world would be calling
here for timber.
Loral Store Profited.
Strong praise was given the Meier
& Frank store in this city by the
visitor.
"After spending two days going com
pletely over the plant I can unhesitat
ingly say that I consider it to be the
finest organized plant of the kind which
I have seen west of Chicago," he said.
"The spirit of co-operation among the
employes is exceptional, and the stock
and quality of goods is all that could
be desired."
'If you are going to write me up in
your pages," he added, "you just tell
"em for me that all Portland needs to
make it a humdinger of a city is just
a big lot of 'jazz. Develop more pep,
advertise and get on the map, and your
natural resources will do the rest."

TRADE OUTLOOK IS GOOD
Jlercliant Just lteturned From Eu
rope Is Optimistic
NEW YORK D. S. Gottesman, vice
president and general manager of M.
Gottesman & Co., Inc., New York city,
returned last week from Europe, where
he made a survey of economic contii
tions, paying particular attention to
Norway, Sweden and Denmark.
"Summing up my conclusions in a
few words," said Gottesman, "I would
say thaht an optimistic view of the
future is justified. Unless the world
is to be swept over by bolshevism, and
there is no reason to believe that it
will be, all indications point to a great
period of activity. Much has been said
about labor disturbances abroad and
it cannot be denied that this industrial
unrest, which is quite noticeable every
where, has been viewed with alarm.
However .the picture is not as black
as it appears on the surface. Signs are
not wanting that the pendulum is be
ginning to swing the other way."
