Threo days of tournament play will
bo In vogue at the Waverley Country
club, beginning tomorrow and lasting
through Saturday and Sunday. Tha
qualifying round of the president's cup
tournament, men's medal play handi
cap competition, 18 holes), will take
placa tomorrow afternoon, the eight
best net scores, to qualify for tha aec
ond round, to be played off Saturday
afternoon. No entries will be taken
after 12 o'clock noon tomorrow In the
presldent'a cup event.
There will also be a men's two-ball
foursome, handicap medal play, at 18
holes tomorrow afternoon. Tha en
trants will be handicapped on a basla
of three-eighths of their combined han
dicap. A rule which must be followed
la that players with 14 handicaps and
under must pick partners) whoee handi

fair grounds there will ba automobile

James Sold to Oakland.
BOSTON, July 2. "Bill" James, one
of the "big three" who pitched the
Boston Braves to a world's champion
ship In 1914, was sold outright today
to the Oakland, CaL club. James has
done ftttle pitching: in recent years as
a result of an Injury to his throwing
arm.

conditions in Washington are excep
tionally good at this time, Lawrence
Wood, state director of tho federal em
ployment service, declared in a state
ment issued here today.
"There are jobs open for all men who
are really seeking- work," the statement
said. "Returning soldiers are being
placed rapidly in positions.

ALB ANT, Or, July 2. (Special.) A
carload of trout fry was placed in Linn
county streams today under the direc
tion of the Santiam Fish and Game as
sociation. The trout came from the
state hatchery at Bonneville and were
planted In small streams entering the
South Santiam river above cascaaia.
L. G. Lewilling of this city, president
and Dr. J. G. Gill of Lebanon, vice
president of the Santiam Fish and Game
association, and C. C Hall of Albany,
supervisor of the Santiam national for
est, who is field superintendent of the
association, were in charge ot the worn
of planting the fish.
The car was taken to ienanon ana
from there the cans of fish were taken
on trucks as far as possible and then
packed in to the streams in which the
trout were placed.
Later two more cars or trout rry
will be sent from the state hatchery for
distribution under the direction of the
Santiam Fish and Game association.
One carload will be planted in streams
tributary to the North Santiam river
and the other in lakes In the eastern
part of Linn county. j
PHKASAXT FARM IS TOPIC
Purchase of Land Xear Eueene to
Be Decided Today.
Whether the state Is to purchase the
Raddish farm near Eugene for pheasant
breeding is the principal question to be
decided this morning when the Oregon
Fish and Game commission meets at
9:30. A number of sportsmen probably
will attened to present their views,
especially those opposed to the invest
ment.
State Game Warden Shoemaker says
he believes the farm is greatly needed
for the propagation of the birds so that
there may be a sufficient quantity to
