S. McCready of Snohomish, retiring president. Mrs. McCready also tinted Indorsement of the league of na tions, passage of the Smith-Towne edu rational Americanization bill, and re peal of the new postal rates on peri odicals. 1 v Reviewing the work accomplished by womfn'a clubs dunna- the year, Mrs. McCready pointed to the Industrial home and clinic Irejislatlon passed by the legislature, to mum progress made In protective work, contributions to an educational loan fund for young- girls, sending of two women to France for leave area work. Governor L. P. Hart, who made a brief address to the convention, was given the convention's best wishes for his administration. The convention dedicated its annual trees to sons and husbands who died In the military serv ice and voted the compilation of a per manent record of woman's war work. The treasurer's report showed the fed eration's financial condition sound. Nineteen pew clubs were formally pre sented. Greetings to Washington women were extended by Mrs. Charles H. Th free balloon which today left the United Slates army baJtoon school at Arcadia, near here, on a trip to any point se lected by the wind, early tonight was reported In the vicinity of La Csnada. about la miles from here. The balloon started In an easterly direction but the wind quickly snifted and carried it to the northwest. The expedition had a three-fold pur pose. Colonel L. J. Maygatt, command er of the school, will test tha balloon as a mortr, ft observation post, and was assisted by Robert J. Lloyd, a photog rapher r. Ford A- Carpenter, meteorologist In charfte of tha local weather bureau, will make weather observations and attempt to chart the prevailing winds. Lieutenant Donald J. Cathcart was to serve as pilot and gain experience In tbe handling of a spherical balloon. The balloon left in the direction of Riverside and the desert beyond. The party carried rations for several days and equipment for all sorts of weather and temperature, and for all eventu alities. JOHN GIBSON CLARK DIES Fioneer of Portland Succumbs at Family Home at Age of 83. John Gibson Clark, pioneer harness and saddle maker of Portland, and president of the John C!rk Baddlery company, died Tuesday night at to family home. 75 Park street, at the age of 83 years. Mr. Clark was born in Ireland and had lived in Portland for about 50 years, being one of the pioneer Dusinevs men of this section , He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Rachel Clark: a daughter. Mrs. C. M. Apperson; and sons. W. T.' Clark and Roy Clark, of this city: John A. Clark of Seattle, and Edward U Clark of Los Angeles. The body is at J. P. She had been a resident of this community for many years, her hus band, the late Daniel Smith, having been a well-known farmer of La Cen ter. Mrs. Smith had been confined to a wheel chair for the 1 Past seven years as the result of a fall, but w very alert mentally, managing all her d'.mestic and financial affairs. Captain Harklns arrived Monday night from Camp Lewis and will aid In the army recruiting drive which is now under way.
