AUDIENCE AT ROME.
Knights of Columbus Worker Looks
on Devastated Regions of France
Before Retnrn to 17. S.
Among those American war workers
who were honored by an audience with
the pope while In Rome was Edward
Everett McGinn, brotner of Judge Henry
McGinn and member of a Portland
family, who returned Sunday from
overseas. Mr. McGinn was in the hos
pital department of the Knights of Co
lumbus and was stationed at Paris the
larger part of his year in the service.
In April, just prior to his departure,
he visited the devastated regions about
Chateau Thierry. Meau. Kheiraa and
Verdun. His work took him to the
hospitals in and near Parts, where he
distributed gifts and cheer to the many
wounded men.
"There was no charge for anything
we did and what made a hit with the
boys was the fact that what was given
was- given without the necessity of
frodutins a pocketbook," said. ilr. ilc-
Glnn yesterday in speaking of his ex
periences. The hospitals he was connected with
were at Joinville, St. Denis. Bellcvuo
and Neuilly. the last being one founded
by Mrs. W. K. Vanderbllt. Sr., and con
sidered the best for surgery in France
Mr. McGinn was In Italy last March
at a time when, he says. Americans
were in high favor and many courtesies
were granted them. His return trip
was made through England, where he
passed two weeks.
Fire Loss Estimated at $7000.
Fire of undetermined cause early
yesterday caused nearly 7000 loss to
property owners around First and Alder
streets. Among the losers were: Sal
vation Army corps No. 4, 1!84 First
street, J 300 ia furniture; F. C. Smith
estate, owners of the building, 12500:
water damage to a second-hand tor
under the Salvation Army hall and the
Western Fish company, 12 First. 5.
The blaze lasted two hours and eight
fire companies fought the flames. The
blaze started in a ehed at the rear of
the building.
