Grain dealers of the Merchants Exchange
ent on record yesterday as favoring the
t!anket permit system rather than individual-permits
in xhovlng the 1919 wheat
crop. S. C. Armstrong, who is now in
Tcw York attending the grain corporation
conference as a representative of Pacific
northwestern grain men, sent the follow
ing telegram to the Portland and Seattle
ilei chants Exchanges:
VAsk grain trade of Portland and Seattle
to discuss and wire me McAlpln hotel. New
fTork, are yon in favor of blanket or indi
vidual permit system for movement of grain
to terminals. Does Seattle and Tacoma wish
Jermit committee located In Portland, as
last year, or separate for Puget sound or
etch- terminal? Should grain trade or
to liners be represented on each committe;
may other suggestions"
The local exchange acted only on the
permit matter, as the other question per
tained more particularly to the northern
trade.
The grain market was a. dull affair at
the regular session. Brewing barley bids
Vcre reduced 2550 cents and feed barley
was down 50 75 cents. Offers for oats
and corn were the same as on Saturday.
Weather conditions In the middle west
s wired from Chicago: "Duluth, part
cloudy, warm; Chicago, clear, warm; Peoria,
clear, 72; Davenport, clear, fine; Kansas
City, threatening, 67; Topeka, cloudy, cool,
Borne rain this morning; Ohio valley, clear.1
Varm."
Corn offerings In the United Kingdom con
tinue very small, but much larger arrivals
re expected. The demand is still very
urgent and any amounts put forward meet
with quick absorption. American and Cana
dian feeding barleys are now competing.
Situation in Argentina remains quiet and
trading Is now on a reduced scale. Oats sup
plies can be considered fairly liberal but
ma yet these have not been offered.
Terminal receipts in cars were reported by
the Merchants Exchange as follows:

Front-Taking and Short Selling
Effective at Opening of Mar
ket Bond List Is Firm.
NEW YORK. June 9. The stock market
today was forced to contend with renewals
of the profit-taking and short selling, which
were effective in depressing prices during
various periods last week. Moreover, the
list did not open with its customary upward
rush, attributed in part to the fact that
buying orders over the week end were not
as numerous aa heretofore. Bear operators
also were more active and their selling
prompted in no smalt measure aeclines rang
ing from five to ten points in some of the
speculative favorites.
Investment buying was responsible for
good headway in standard railroad stocks.
Early weakness in United RttM Stl wan
followed by full recovery in sympathy with
active Inquiry for Bethlehem Steel and
equipment iusues. Some of the motors, ship
pings and high-priced oils were severely af
fected by the early selling.
Low-priced (ODDSTH were x tnii vMv
bought, with Chino scoring a rise of four
points. Sales amounted to 1.55O.000 shares.
The bond market ruled firm with :hil
Copper 7s rising five points. Liberty bonds
yielded slightly. Total sales (par value)

Corn values at the outset and near the fin

Napoleon Slept Only Four Hours
Partly because of his ability to work hard
20 hours of every day the great French general
was able to accomplish more than other military
men of his time.
But a bond never sleeps at all. It works
for its owner both night and day until a definitely
fixed maturity, when it returns to the purchaser
all that was paid for it in addition to the interest
which it earned in the meantime.
ALL YOU NEED IS A PAIR OF. SCISSORS
There are no holidays or vacations for the bond. It
doesn't discriminate between Sunday and week day. The
bond serves its master faithfully, requiring neither upkeep
nor repairs, neither taxes nor insurance. All that it asks
is a safe place to work in and a scissoring now and then to
make way for the next coupon.
Nothing is quite as dependable as interest on a safe
government, municipal or corporation bond.
PUT YOUR MONEY IN GOOD SECURITIES AND
YOU WILL BE ABLE TO SLEEP PEACEFULLY
EVERY NIGHT.
