SCAPPOOSE FARM VISITED
Tarty in Automobiles Today Will
. View Herds at Oswego, Carlton,
, Ierrydalo and Independence.
BY ADDISON BENNETT.
Tcsterday was the beginning: of the
jubilee which the Oregon Jersey Cattle
club is holding- in honor of one of Its
members, whose cow recently made a
world's record in production of milk and
butter fat. This jubilee will continue
until Friday evening, and it will be a
Creat event for the Jersey enthusiasts.
The members of the club and many
friends f oregatlvered at 8 o'clock yester
day morning and took automobiles for a
drive over the Columbia river highway.
While this trip had but little to do with
milk production, breeds of cattle or
anything else pertaining to the ad
vancement of the production of dairy
products, it did, however, have much
to do with the camaraderie of the Jersey
ites by showing them the wonderful
road up the river, which many of them
Jtnew about only by hearsay or reading.
About a dozen machines were used on
this trip to carry some 50 persons as
far as Multnomah Falls. A stop of
.bout three-quarters of an hour was
made at Vista House, and it was the
consensus of opinion that no matter what
the said Vista House cost, it is worth
double the money.
Scenery Win Admiration.
At the falls an tour or so was spent,
siearly all of the party going up to
the bridge and getting a touch of the
epray that they might sort of feel as
vell as see nature's marvel. If Simon
Benson was within a Irundred, miles
of the falls at the time his ears most
kave turned, blood color, for th com
pliments heaped upon him for his great
eifts to the people of Oregon were of
the glory hallelujah order. His son
Amos, Engineer Lancaster and Johnny
Icon all came In for thanks and com
pliments. But the day! Had it been set aside
is a day fit for thanksgiving it could
not have been finer. Going up the
north wind had a sort of fillip in it
hat was fine and dandy ia this dry
climate. You can take that word "dry"
in any sense you see fit, but I mean
It as being a season when no liquids
containing more than a whisper of
alcohol can pass the censors, that is,
while the censors are awake. As we
turned homeward the wind was less
encouraging, but the air was filled
with the fragrance of mid-May, and
the sunshine was softened to the finest
senses of even a Jersey enthusiast of
3 8 carats. Or, maybe, that sentence
should be turned about to read "18-i-arat
Jersey enthusiasts." And of the
BO members of our party 49 were of
that order; the 50th member was from
Kansas.
Dairy Fain Q.nlekly Reached.
Then back to town and lunch, ready
for a start from the same rendezvous
e.s in the morning. Twelfth and Burn
aide. AH aboard at 2 P. M. Some 15
auto loads. Then down the river to the
habitat of Harry West, two miles be
low Scappoose. Oh, but it was a fine
ride. We smashed the speed record in
our joyousness. The speed cops were
all asleep, I guess. I think we hit it up
to 60 miles an hour. Even the flivvers
that can usually not go more than
four minutes to the mile, even they
bit the road only occasionally. I will
not say we got to Harry's place before
we started, but we got there P. D. Q.,
maybe a little sooner.
Now. the last time I was at the West
domicile some member of the party
had a few bottles of real beer not
near beer. Three or four per cent bet
ter than that. A number of bottles were
cached under a loose plank in the milk
bouse. When I left that day there were
several bottles still in the cache. So
yesterday I found the cache, all of a
Hidden I found the cache! But the beer!
.Please excuse these tears.)
Thirty head of the West Jersey herd
vere assembled in his cowyard to meet
and greet us. Read it again to meet
and greet us! Did you ever get real
sociable, real well acquainted with a
real Jersey cow? If you have, you will
know the loving nature, the docile man
lier, the pensive eyes of even the wild
st of them. They seem to want you
to caress them, and they surely wish
to caress you. It is said that a man
who does not love a horse or a dog is
only half born; let me say that any
man or woman who does not" love a
Jersey cow never ought to have been
born at all.
War Harts Importing Business,
In 1911 Harry West went to the
Xsland of Jersey and bought 62 head
of Jerseys; in 1913 he went again and
returned with 35, in 1914 he repeated
and brought over 32 and every last
one an animal of noble birth. We saw
some of those animals and many of
their off-spring yesterday and surely it
was a rare yard of Jerseys. Mr. -West,
however, had just fairly got his im
porting machinery in running order
when "Billy Hohensomething" declared
war; not only declared it but went in
with both feet. Kerplunk went Harry
"West's importing business and every
body else's.
So we've just got to out-Jersey. 60
to speak, the Island of Jersey and beat
them at their own game. Our latest
Oregon champion, Vivian La France,
bred near Marion, Or., beats any "crit
ter" of the Jersey breed ever produced
In the Island of Jersey, or elsewhere.
I intended to give the names of some
f the party, but tomorrow will do. And
then we will have more names to show
tip. Anyhow we all got acquainted, we
had a good old time, got back to Port
land really and truly happy and then
to the banquet hall we went.
Today we will visit the Iron Mine
farm, near Oswego, the Ed. Carey farm
at Carlton, where we will take lunch,
then in the afternoon the Frank Lynn
x&rm ai reif yuic, nits iucArinur oc
Stauff farm at Rickreall and the W. O.
Morrow farm at Independence. Then
to Salem for the night.

The "Hoover" Electric
Suction Carpet Sweeper
Beats, as It Sweeps, as It Cleans
While the patented Hoover brush is loosening and
shaking to the surface the deeply imbedded sand and
dirt, it is brushing and sweeping the nap clean of
threads and hairs and straightening and lifting the
nap of the rug, giving it added luster and freshness
and renewing the clear, brightness of the pattern.
Dusting can precede sweeping when the Hoover is
used. When the sweeping is done the Hoover bag
is quickly removed and by standing on the ring of
the bag the dust may be shaken out on a paper with
out scattering one particle.
Let Us Demonstrate the Hoover
on your carpets in your home or on
our carpets in the store. One trial
will convince you that the Hoover
electric suction sweeper is without a
