BAKERY WALKOUT AVERTED
Master Operators Grant Practically
All Demands of Men.
There -will be no strike of the sales
men drivers of the Portland bakeries.
The master bakers yesterday granted
practically all the demands of the men.
All salesmen, salaried and commis
sioned, must be members of the Bak
ery and Confectionery Salesmen's union.
The minimum salary Is to bei$24 a week
with a 7 per cent commission for all
sales In excess of $300. The nine-hour
day and the six-day week were grant
ed with the understanding that the
bakers were to use discretion in mak
ing deliveries on Sundays to hotels and
restaurants in emergencies.
Members of the union and master
bakers met yesterday afternoon at 4
o'clock and celebrated the settlement
of the matter with an exchange of fe
licitations and expressions of mutual
Interest and good-will.
THEFT CONFESSED IN NOTE

This note in childi3h scrawl was
found yesterday pinned to the elevator
shaft of a building at Fifth and Davis
streets, where worked Percival Gates
who lost a motorcycle last Saturday.
Deputy Sheriff Schirmer arrested
Rudolph Hartley, 15, a friend of Gates
who works at the Pacific Stationery
company, for the theft. The youngster
is said to have confessed to being a
party to the motorcycle stealing. He
was turned over to the juvenile court.

The war department will furnish
equipment. Lectures by experts will
also be arranged by the department.
To further train reserve officers, it
has been arranged that studcris grad
uating will be commissioned as tem
porary second lieutenants, attached to
regular units of the arm. .
