THE MORNING OREGONTAN, T1ITJIISDAY, 3IAT 13, 1910. 17 THIX1E IS HP CLUB GUEST ORPHEUM EXTEETAIXER MEM BEIJ OF LOCAIi ORGAXIZATIOX. President of Clnb Gets Kiss for His Laudatory n em arks and An nounces' Year's Dues Paid. Trlile Frteanza never delighted an Orpheum audience more btan she did the Portland Ad club yesterday at the noon luncheon in the crystal room of the Benson hotel, when she planted a lull-grown kiss in the physiognomy of President Dana and made every other man-member Jealous. Trixie Fraganza is the only woman honorary member of the Ad club, a- distinction that came tc her hack in 1914, when Charles F. Berg was president, but Marshall Dana is the first club executive whose introductory remarks were of such fetching: effect as to win the osculatory appreciation. Pleasantly parried was this retort courteous of the comedy entertainer when out of his evident embarrassment the club man emerged to announce her dues paid for another year. Even the jazz put into the programme by Cole McElroy"s band was mild com pared with the pep and sparkle of the entertainer's ready wit and portrayal of the life un-ier the white lights of entertaining- the American public. W. W. Ward told the Ad clubbers of the proposed creation of centralized Industrial sites on both sides of the Willamette, including the Mocks bot tom and Guild's lake sections. Colonel J. Guy Strong, late of the 91st division, was introduced and spoke briefly. Re ports were heard of progress in the plans for development of the resorts of the Mount Hood district, in support of which the club has Joined its influ ence. David W. Hazen spoke on "Recon struction in Europe," and declared that any belief in building an enormous trade with the devastated territory is likely to lead to disappointment. In the opinion of Mr. Hazen the rebuild ing of that country will be of the same character of construction that existed before the war, with materials on hand or to be produced by the labor of the population of that region. While the men were in service the . women and children throughout the warring coun tries were actively engaged in indus try and continued production of arti cles that they knew would find mar kets again when communication with the rest of the world should again be come normal. OHKEH DENIES . CHARGES SO ATTEMPT TO KEEJ TIP MEAT PRICES, SAYS SECRETARY. Roast Beef and Salt Pork, 250,000,--000 Pounds of It, Xot for Ordi nary' Commercial Trade Here. WASHINGTON. May 14. Secretary Baker denied today there was any re lation between any attempt to support the prices of meat supplies in this country and the tentative arrangement reached by representatives of the war department and the packing Industry for the disposal abroad of 250.000,000 pounds of canned meat. The depart ment announced a few days ago that this stock, amounting to the norma output of American packing companies for two years, would be placed on the American market. "There has been misapprehension with regard to the policy of the de partment in disposing of meat sup Plies,' 'the secretary declared in an in formal statement. "The meats in ques lion are specially prepared products, in special containers and of a kind never sold commercially in the united States roast beef and especially salt pork which are not articles of ordinary commercial trade here. The cans are not even labeled. The question of dis posing of these supplies is not one of maintaining price levels the war de partment has no -interest in that but in finding some way to dispose of them.
