BARBER ASSERTS HE
IS
J. J. Langston Sues J. N. Hart,
Attorney, and Others.
$3000 EXTORTED, CHARGED
Plaintiff Avers That ly Coercion and
Threats He Was Forced to Give
$500 in Cash and Note.
J. N. Hart, a Portland attorney, and
XIr. and Mrs. J. E. Staley are accused
by J. J. Langston, proprietor of a bar
ber shop at 203 Third street, of ex
torting $3000 from him in cash and a
note by coercion and' threats, in a suit
filed in the circuit court yesterday,
which demands cancellation of mort
gages totaling $2000 and the return of
$500 in cash.
The plaintiff asserts that on Friday,
April 25, Attorney Hart, . acting- for
himself and the Staleys, summoned him
to his office in the Oerlinger building.
There Hart is said to have produced a
revolver from a desk, telling Langston
that it belonged to Staley, who had
threatened to kill Langston. Hart said
that he had taken the weapon from
Staley to prevent murder, it is alleged,
and then demanded the payment of
$3000.
As this demand was being pressed,
eays Langston, Staley entered the of
fice, flashing a deputy sheriffs star.
Hart is then said to have informed
Langston that unless he produced $3000
immediately he would be taken to the
county jail on a felony charge.
Langston alleges that he protested his
innocence of any crime, but that, in
fear of his life and a 'prisoner in the
attorney's office, he signed a. note for
$2500, giving mortgages on his bar
ber shop and a lot owned on Capitol
Hill. This was witnessed by Dorothy
Canfield, stenographer for Hart, and
was recorded at the county clerk's of
fice the tame day, he contends.
Langston accuses Staley of then con
ducting him to his home, acting as a
deputy sheriff, where Langston ' pro
cured $500 in cash which he had been
saving for himself and wife. He was
then taken back to the office of Hart,
where a division of the $500 was made,
he says. He alleges that Hart received
$100, Lecla Staley, a daughter of J. E.
and Jennie M. Staley, $125, the balance
going to Mr. and Mrs. Staley. Langston
charges an agreement by which Hart
was to get 20 per cent of the proceeds
of the alleged blackmail and the Staleys
the remainder.
Asserting that the criminal accusa
tions made against him were untrue.
Langston demands the surrender and
cancellation of his note and judgment
for $500.

EUGENE ASKS E1E FARM
REPORTED DISSEXSIOX AMONG
C II AMBER MBS DENIED.
Only Thought "Was That Location
on Main Road, if Possible,
Migbt Be Better.
EUGENE, Or., May ' 2. (Special.)
There is no dispute among the members
of the Eugene Chamber of Commerce
regarding establishing of the proposed
state game farm at Eugene, according
to Bruce B. Brundage, chief of the
game and fish bureau of the chamber
Mr. Brundage refutes the story that
peared in a Portland paper Thursday
evening to the effect that the attempt
to locate a game farm here is the re
Bult of a political agreement made be
tween State Game Warden Shoemaker
and Representative L. K. Bean of Lane
county, during the session of the leg
islature.
Regarding the charge that there is
dissension among the members of the
chamber as to location of the game
farm here. Mr. Brundage said:
"The fish and game bureau simply
thought that it another site were pos
sible along the Pacific highway, in
stead of the Reddish farm, which is off
the main road, it would be better to
establish the .farm there, as this would
give travelers the opportunity of seeing
what Oregon is doing in regard to
game raising and restocking. There
was no disagreeable argument what
ever among the members, or any un
derhanded work'
