THE MORyiSG OREGONIAX, THURSDAY, 3IAY 1, 1919. 17 REPUBLICANS PUT OFF COVEfyANT DISCUSSION Senators Agree to Refrain Un til Conference Is Held. CHAMBERLAIN IN SUPPORT Oregon Senator Announces That Re vised League Document Clears Away His Objections. WASHINGTON. April SO. Replies were received today from several re publ.can senators to whom Senator if.VLl Massachusetts, republican hfr n.d fent- Curtis of Kansas, whip, yesterday sent telegrams asking them to refrain from discussing- the re vised leasrue of nations covenant until a republican conference could be held to determine upon the republican atti tude toward the document. Senator Curtis said that about five senators now absent from Washington had replied approving the suggested course. The names of those from whom answers were received were not made public No date for the confer ence has been selected. Republican senators continued to withhold discussion of the revised cove nant today, although several. Including Senators Borah of Idaho and Johnson of California, are understood to con template issuing statements within a few days. Senator Chamberlain of Oregon, dem ocrat, in a statement tonight, an nounced his support of the revised covenant. "There were certain fundamentals," the Oregon senator said, ''which I thought ought to be left out and others which I thought ought to be included and which were not so Included. As the constitution of the league now stands these fundamentals have been excluded or included to meet the objections which I had. and it seems to me that it would be unfortunate for the world that the league should be held up or defeated by the- senate except on account of an overwhelming emergency. "It seems to me that if the league of nations and the peace treaty is signed and agreed to. it is better for world peace that America does not assume the responsibility of delaying it for any flight reason."
