Steel Loses on Ere of Quarterly
Meeting Better Tone Noted
in Bond Trading.
NEW TORK. April 2S. A note of caution
pervaded today's stock market, but the ab
sence of fresh complications in the foreign
situation and publication of the' revised
league of nations covenant furnished the
Incentive for another broad movement, en
compassing many substantial gains.
Market letters over th. week end were
mainly of an optimistic tenor, albeit stress
ing the wisdom ot taking profits, especially
in speculative .issues, which have recently
scored the greatest advances.
As Is usually the case on the eve of -the
quarterly meeting, the course of United
States Steel was followed with keen Interest
for some hint respecting th. extra common
dividend, but after fluctuating within ex
tremely narrow limits, steel closed at a
larre fractional loss.
The markets course was mainly guided,
however, by oils and so-called oil rails.
Conspicuous in the -first-named division
wer. Rnvnl rjnth issues at net gains of
T4 points, Texas company 94 and Sinclair
8. while Mexican Petroleum rallied over
& points from its heavy opening.
Minor rails were prominent. Investment
rails reacted moderately. but shippings.
American International exoepted, reflected a
revival of interest.
Independent steels were hesitant, but re
lated equipments strengthened. Sales
amounted to 1.580,000 shares.
Minor rails were the strongest issues of
tho bond market, liberty and internationals
also Improving. Total sales, par value, ag
