Portland's Answer
AM ready. Upon the opening of the Victory
Loan today, fair Oregon, you will find me pre
pared through the patriotism of my people-
to uphold the honor of our country and the pride
of our state.
I appreciate the responsibility, realize the obligation and welcome the
opportunity to liquidate this debt for service rendered and gratitude enjoyed.
I have never lagged in the pace set so many months ago. I have given my
mind, my soul, my body to this cause. By the sweat of my brow my ships have
slipped down the long river to brave the sharks of the deep sea; my pockets
have been open wide as each call for gift or loan has gone forth; my heart has
beat time to the marching feet of my sons.
Support this Victory L'oan? Yes, as surely as I thank God for the freedom
of my people.. Ere the sun sets tonightthere will be a gathering momentum of
subscriptions moving on like the rush tide of democracy. Before its irresistible
force will sweep those petty excuses which, born of thoughtlessness, careless
ness, forgetfulness, would stay my will and hand.
Look to me, Oregon, for fulfillment of my duty.
