After a fearful record on the road,
Portland's 1U Pacific Coast league
baseball team Is now aboard a "ret
tier" speeding- homeward to tackle
Vernon hers Wednesday afternoon. Two
games won. 11 lost, and a percentage
ef .1(1 is a nightmare, but with the
addition of a shortstop and an oat
fielder It Is expected that soon after
ths club's arrival here the score will
be telling a different story.
Judge William Wallace McCredle,
president of the Portland Baseball
company, announced last night that
sramea would commence at 3 o'clock
P. M- as usual this season. Instead of
:lt P. M.. which has been mentioned,
Both Portland and Vernon fared bad
ly with the same pair of opponents the
first fortnight. Los Angeles took six
out of seven from both of them, but
Vinegar Bill Esalck's hirelings suc
ceeded In winning a brace of games
on the Mormon pasture. The trained
Tigers will not be able to reach here
until Tuesday night, which caused the
postponing of the opener until wednes
day. " The Beavers will steam in to
morrow morning.
Oakland and Seattle are billed to
pry off the lid at the Sound City on
Wednesday also. They will come north
on the same train and will not reach
the Poget Sound burg until late Tues
day afternoon, which will make it next
to Impossible to pull off the proper
opening day festivities prior to the
game. Therefore it is likely that
Prexy Brewster will postpone his open
Ing, although no announcement has
yet come from the north.
Portland's baseball boosters will eon
rregat at 12:J0 p. M. today in room
US of the Oregon hotel. Final arrange-
menta for the opening day parade will
be made. Several amateur and semi
professional baseball teams will ride
In the parade clad la uniforms. Auto
mobiles will be furilshed for all such
nines, and all are u.-ged to get in com
munication with Kay Barkhurat. chair
man of the parade committee.
Oliver Stevens has already entered
Ms Willamette Iron and Steel works
crew, which will be dressed In its new
outfit- Wednesday's victory loan snd
baseball parade will commence at 12:30
P. M- at 14th and Morrison streets.
Anyone wishing to enter Is asked to be
there at 12 o'clock, (noon), reporting to
Ray Barkhurst.

Local fandom Is "pulling" for Out
fielder Dixie Walker and Is hopeful
that he will break in the opening series.
Walker was put out of the game at
Salt Lake when he cut his hand on a
rle"e of rusty tin on the Mormon cen
terfleld fence, and the Injury has been
announced aa serious. He was hitting
at a .141 clip at the time and is missed
from the Beaver muster roll.
Seattle's Slwashes showed that they
were Improving at Sacramento In the
series just closed. Manager BUI Cly
mer has won seven pennants in It
years of managing and finished lower
than third place but once in all that
time. If his record goes for anything,
the Rainlera will make It interesting
for the rest of the clubs all season.
