EXPORT BUTTER DEMAND IS STBON
Sslea for Shipment ta Europe Affect East
ern Markets,
The European demand for lower grades
of butter la responsible for the strong mar
ket east. The weekly review of the bureau
of markets says:
The keynote of the situation seems to
center on the very strong export demand.
Most of the buying orders were to ac
counts of New York houses and each of
the markets has had to partially sell them
selves short In order to care for this bust
nesa. This has meant a strong market,
with prices In sellers' favor. Boston alone
reports over a dozen cars shipped to New
York and a redaction in storage stocks of
over 13.000 tubs. Centralized oars and un
derrradea have been chiefly In demand,
causing margins between the lower score
nrlces and extraa to be cut down. Also
the cleaning up of these lower priced good:
caused the finer grades of butter to be
firmer than they have appeared for some
me.
Consumptive demand has continued good
considering the high prices. In spite ot
the very firm feeling noted at the moment,
however, a certain amount of nervousness
has been apparent throughout the week
among some of the dealers and there has
been no marked disposition to allow stoexs
to accumulate on floors. The export de
mand Is felt to be rather uncertain and
rullnr prices pretty hllfh. The figures.

Ikndon Exchange Market Disturbed.
LOXDO.V. March 18. Abandonment ot
the control of French exchange has created
great nervousness in the money market here.
Fears that similar action was Imminent in
connection with New York exchange caused
the cable transfer rate in London to fall
somewhat today. From the opening of the
market it exhibited a disturbed, almost
panicky condition. An enormous business
was done in dollars around the figure of
$4.69 for a pound sterling Some bids made
late in the afternoon were at the rata of
$4.67, notwithstanding the fact that the
New York cable rate has remained at the
old level of $4,764.
Exchange exnerta Inclined to the belief
that int vested authorities will continue, the
stabilisation of New York exchange in
order to avoid the almost world-wide dis
turbance which, it Is considered, might re-
suit from the abandonment of control.

NEW YORK. March 18. Trading on the
stock exchange today was noteworthy for
the fact that the early and intermediate
sessions were punctuated by frequent periods
or apathy in striking contrast to tne nign
pressure of -the past fortnight
Activity was most marked in the final
hour, when a temporary demand for high
grade rails infused strength to the general
list, but this inquiry flattened out when
other leaders reacted 1 to almost 5 points
on obvious selling for profits and offerings
for the short account. .
Accompanying the intermittent dullness
were surface indications that the recent
speculative whirl had run its course for a
wniie and that certain branches of the list
had become what is technically known as
state. ot only was the market move
ment less sustained, but the scope of the
trading also experienced a pronounced con
traction, concentsating- to an unusual ex
tent in specialties of thn wpnnriirv nr
important groups.
