RED CROSS CANTEEN
ACTIVITIES INCREASE
Portland Workers Cheer Hun
dreds of Returning Soldiers.
JANUARY REPORT PREPARED
letters From Men. Passing Through
City Contain Hearty Expres
sions of Appreciation.
There isn't a soldier, sailor or marine
arriving at Union Station of passing
through the city but finds friends
awaiting him. His home may be in
any section of America it makes no
difference. Advice, smokes, friendly
talks, and aid in difficulty, all are
ready for him.
"They are ail Oregon boys to us." de
clares Mrs. Ferdinand K. Reed, captain
of the Red Cross Canteen of Portland,
a unit which has gained National prom
inence by reason of its service to the
boys in uniform.
Soldiers Express Appreciation.
Typical of the appreciation of the
men themselves is the following grate
ful letter from First Lieutenant Stan
ley M. Arndt, commander of a troop
train which recently passed through j
J'ortiana, en route from camp Lewis,
AVash., to Presidio, Cal.:
"We were heartily welcomed and
shown the kindest hospitality," wrote
lieutenant Arndt. "It meant a great
deal to us to see the smiling Red Cross
canteen girls, with their kindly words
of greeting and their generous baskets.
"Jt surely made us all very happy,
Rnd every man on the train unites in
expressing his heartiest thanks and
appreciation to the Red Cross canteen
service of Portland."
Wounded Are A rr Ivinar.
When troop trains are to pass through
the city, the canteen is officially noti
fied by camp commandants of the hour
of arrival. Between times the workers
take care of the thousands of unat
tached men in uniform who tarry in
Portland while on their way home, or
who have just returned to Oregon.
During the month of January the lo
cal canteen served 21,748 soldiers. 2719
sailors, 837 marines and 482 officers.
Its workers aided 47 sick soldiers and
removed three from trains that medical
attention might be given. On January
-8 the service handled E45 men; on
the day succeeding, 1163 men, and on
the following day, 1896 men. Not a
week passes without the arrival in
Portland cn route of two or three cars
of wounded men from overseas. These
the canteen workers visit and minis
ter to.
During the past month, the canteen's
report shows that it dispensed the fol
lowing free supplies: 524 magazines,
at a cost to the canteen of 10 cents
tach; one case of matches; 54 one-cent
stamps: 8397 two-cent stamps; 5142
three-cent stamps; 32.800 cigarettes;
1800 pounds of candy; 24,800 postal
i;ards; 232 boxes of fruit; 170 meals;
214 lunches, and 24 decks of playing
cards. The total value of supplies fur
nished free during January was
11846.60.
Lunch Card Distributed. '
The canteen also has printed, for
distribution among returned soldiers,
cards to be exchanged for coffee and
doughnuts at the depot restaurant, and
to be redeemed from the canteen funds.
The management of the restaurant
made a special reduction for the can
teen service.
Mrs. Reed also has made arrange
ments with various local theaters to
accommodate 10 soldiers or sailors at
afternoon and night performances.
Tickets will be issued by the canteen,
honored by the doorkeepers, and re
turned to the canteen for the payment
of war tax.
This arrangement has been made
-with the following 12 theaters, which
will accommodate 240 men in uniform
each day through the canteen arrange
ment: Alcazar, .Baker, Columbia, Hip
podrome, Liberty, Lyric. Majestic. I'an
tages, People's, Star, Strand and Sunset.
The theater privilege will afford oppor
tunity for soldiers en route through
the city to spend a pleasant hour or so
while waiting for their train.
BURNS MAN DROWNS SELF
Xote l'ound in Coat rocket of Jolin
TV. Saycr, Near Skamokawa.
The community of Skamokawa is
disconcerted over a suicide. Last Mon
day Mark Kelly, a fanner of the AVcst
Valley, saw a coat and cap lying on the
bank of the creek. He hung them on
n. stake, thinkink that they belonged
to some one who was fishing. On Fri
day, the coat being still there, he found
two letters and an envelope in an in
side pocket. One letter was addressed
to Clifford Reed. Burns, Or., and the
other to. John W. Sayer. Burns, Or.
The envelope was unsealed and con
tained a f5 bill and 10 cents in silver.
On one side of the envelope was writ
ten, "Whoever finds this suitcase, post
these letters. I am going to drown my
self. Should have shot myself long
ago. John P. Sayer, Burns, Or." On
the other side of tne envelope was pen
ciled "I put a dime in here for postage
and five, dollars for Williams for your
service."
The missing- man had a father and
three, sisters living in Burns, and was
a member of the Masonic lodge of that
place. Search is being made for the
body.
