the prospects of Argentine competition gave
fresh impetus today to the downward swin
of the corn market. Prices closed weak.

Undoubtedly the chief immediate bearish
factor In regard to corn waa knowledge that
arrivals here had broadened out to boo car'
loads and had also expanded at other lead
lug centers. In addition, however, utter
ances of food administration officials
to need of lower prices continued to stlm
ulate selling, especially as the statements
were coupled with notice that licenses
would be freely granted for import from
Arrentins.
Oats followed corn, but at times showed
a little independent strength. Receipts
oats were relatively small.
Pork and ribs reflected the weakness
corn. Despite this fact, lard was in fai
reauest owing to sympathy with condi'
tions at Liverpool.

PRINTING LAW IS SOUGHT
Washington. Proposes Measure to
Keep Contracts AVithin. State.
CEXTRAL.IA. Wash., Jan. 13. (Spe
cial.) - Centralia Typographical Union
No. 694 has addressed a. letter to Sen
ator A. E. Judd and Representatives
H. W. Thompson, H. H. Swofford and
J. S. Siler, members of Lewis County's
delegation in the State Legislature,
asking their support of a bill to be
introduced during the present session
providing that ail ettate, county, mu
niclpal and school district printing be
done within the state of Washington
The letters point out. that several large
printing contracts have gone to con
cerns in other states; that Washing
ton's progressive 'laws make taxes
much higher in this state than many
others and that it is almost impossible
for printing concerns in this state to
compete with slates having no pro
gressive laws.
The local union has expressed itself
in favor of retaining the present labor
laws, but believes that these laws
should rot prove a handicap to the
employers of its members in- bidding
on printing contracts.
BOISE FIGHTS INFLUENZA
Two Members of Itlalio Legislature
Are Stricken.
BOISE, Idaho, Jan. 13. (Special.)
Boise has taken drastic action to check
the Influenza epidemic. The City
Board of Health has established quar
antines on all places where the disease
appears and directed all members of
affected families to remain under,
quarantine. A marked increase is
shown in the number of cases during
the past month.
Every effort is made to safeguard
the Legislature in session here. Two
members are ill with Influenza, but it
believed the disease was contracted
before they arrived in this city.
The Ked Cross home service 1ms been
thoroughly organized to carry on the
fight against the epidemic. Volunteer
nurses have been placed in homes.

WINTER SUNSET BEAUTIFUL
Library of Congress Asks for Photo
graph Taken in Gorge.
HOOD RIVER. Or., Jan. 13. (Spe-
ial.) C. C. Hutchins, secretary of the
White Salmon. Wash., Chamber of
Commerce and well-known North
western good roads booster, has re
ceived a request from the Library of
Congress for a copy of a photograph
o recently made, ' Eventide, showing
a Winter sunset in the Columbia Gorge.
Mr. Hutchins had been waiting six
years for proper weather conditions.
The picture shows the sun at the very
enter of the gorge, setting behvnd
bank of clouds. On just two days of
the year can the sun be photographed
n such a position, and in past years,
Mr. Hutchins says, the cloud effect had
been lacking.
