ping Shares Are Firm.
NEVv" YORK, Dec 4. Stock trading today
was characterized by uncertainty, the mar
ket falling into a condition of inertia after I
the moderately active first hour.
There was little discussion of the main
points in the President's message to Con
gress and yesterday's intimations of an
early reduction of the margin rate from
30 to 20 per cent' found no reflection in
the money market, call loans holding at
8 per cent.
Ralls were dullest of all important stocks
and such changes as occurred in that group
were generally downward. Pacifies, grangers
and coalers easing 1 to 1U points, but rally
ing slightly later.
Shippings were the only popular shares I
to show consistent strength, marine pre
ferred making up its early reaction of
2 points with an actual gain of that much,
easing toward tho end.
Oils were more than ordinarily erratic,
Mexican Petroleum yielding most of Mts
-i-point advance. Common and preferred
California Petroleum retained the better
part ox their gains with Pan-Americans.
Studebaker was the striking exception to
the strength of motors and subsidiaries, los
ing almost 3 points at the outset, but rally
ing in the final hour. Coppers and tobaccos
wero firm. Equipments and leathers
forfeited 1 to 2 points. Sales 425.000 shares.
Heavy selling of liberty issues, principally
the fourth 4s, at the new minimum of
96.Z0, waa the striking feature of tho bond
market. Other domestic bonds. Including
speculative rails, were moderately lower.
but internationals held firm. Total sales.

Investments for the
Readjustment Period
DURING the present epochal readjustment
of the world's industry and commerce
from a war to a peace basis, it behooves the
investor to place his funds in securities that are
strongly bulwarked against shifting conditions.
Such securities comprise the bonds of govern
ments and municipalities and of strong corpo
rations whose products or services are indis
pensable to the public.
Securities of this character can now be bought
at prices affording a relatively high income over
a long or short period, and we shall be pleased
to furnish for your consideration our current
list of 73 attractive bonds and short-term notes.
These include Government issues yielding up to
4.55 ; municipals, 4.90 ; railroads, 7 ; public
utilities, 7 ; industrials, 6.83.
