THE 3IORXIXG OREGOXIAX, SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 2, 1918. PRESIDENT'S PLEA IS RESENTED BY WOMEN Mothers of Oregon Soldiers . Voice Protest. LOYALTY HELD INDICTED Partisan Appeal for Election Only of Democrats Declared to Be v Very Crave Error. Scores of Republican -women in Ore Eon, many of "them mothers of boys fighting in the trenches, have joined with the indignant women of Portland in resenting the partisan '.appeal of President AVilson for the election only of Democrats next Tuesday. Numerous letters and telegrams are being received at Republican State Committee head quarters from these women, who feel that the President's remarks were an unwarranted indictment of their Roy alty and patriotism. How Oregon women feel on the sub ject is best indicated by the following: I think the President made a very grave error. Airs. H. L. Dumble, Eugene. You may rest assured that we are doing our part in this county to re-elect Governor WIthycombc, Senator McNary and the rest of the Kepublican candidates. We are re joicing1 to think President Wilson spilled the political beans In time to allow the Republicans to line up for our November election. Ida M. Cummlngs, Albany. Oregon Is a Kepublican state. Our state officers are largely Kepublican. A majority of the quota furnished to the Army Is Re publican. With these Kepublican tendencies we have given unstinted support to every National war-time measure. How unneces sary for our 'President to attempt to turn this loyal, unwavering support into partisan channels. Our Kepublican women voters, who have given their sons and husbands t fight for liberty, and. their money, time and strength for every war activity, resent the Wholly uncalled-for appeal from the Presi dent to wipe out the Kepublican party. Airs. I. Perozzl, Ashland. Having a son in France. I feel like the President has made a very grave mistake. Mrs. L. M. .Blowers, Eugene. This Is t our war, not the Democrats. Democrats are not infallible. Mrs. M. S. Woodcock, Corvallis. Wholly uncalled for. If you want to be under 'a kaiser, go to Germany Mrs. K. K. Blanchard, Grants Pass. By his plea President "Wilson steps from the leadership of a united American people to the leadership of one party, attempting to appropriate for itself the glory of a suc cessful, unanimous participation of all Amer icans In this great war. It will result in a sweeping victory for the Republicans. Mrs. V. L. Chambers, Mrs. W. W. Calkins, Mrs. L. H. Johnson, Mrs. L. E. Bean, and Mrs. Robert Mc Murphy, Eugene. - Republican women of Benton County deeply deplore President Wilson's accusa tion that only Democrats can be trusted with the. settlement of questions arising from the war. and they believe it their duty to support the entire- ticket. Mrs. Carrie McDevitf,, Corvallis. Lost votes from both parties. Mrs. A. N. Parsons, Grants Pass. With my two sons in the service, T feel like this is the last straw. Mrs. Walter Kimball, Eugene. Great mistake. Causing great criticism. Mrs. VanUyke, Grants Pass. I wish to express my disapproval of our President's recent letter regarding a Demo cratic Congress, which was uncalled foi in the present crisis. Mrs. R. J. Hunter, Corvallis. Lacks diplomacy he used with foreign na tions. Mrs. Gerould, Grants Pass. I think this is no time to bring in parti san politics. Mrs. F. H. Blackman, Eugene As a mother of two boys in the service. WOUIllltll . Ill r ranee, i irreni ma a-v. v. Ration. of the President that Republicans are unfit to act as Representatives in Congress. This should cause Benton County's loyal women to vigorously support McNary, Haw ley and Withycombe, all of whom are 100 per cent supporters of the war and war measures. Mrs. A. J. Johnson. Corvallis. The President's open letter to the Ameri can people was uncalled for and will be resented by that class. of intelligent and In dependent Americans who believe that the right of franchise should be held sacred against dictation and coercion.' Prue Adale Piatt, Med ford. His worst opponents are Democrats. Too bad to mix politics now. Mrs. Judge Hale, Grants Pass. With my only son in the service, I strong ly condemn such action. Mrs. J. H. Schu macher. Eugene. President Wilson's letter Is an insult to true American patriots, and if heeded No vember 5, will tend toward autocracy. Mrs. H. G. Stoeckman, Medford. The President's letter was much less than what the people had a right to expect frdm him when he had been so loyally supported bv the Republicans. Mrs. W. T. Grieve, Med ford. There should be no party politics while our country is at war. Our Republican leaders in Congress, who are laying aside all partisan feeling, have supported, all war measures, will justly resent the expression of the President in taking to him&elf and his Democratic family all credit for efficiency in his appeal to the American people. The pacifists of that family in hindering legis lation have played Into the hands of the enemy far more than these discredited but loyal Republicans. Thousands of Republi can women are working unceasingly to help their country and uphold the hand of the President. They . will feel keen disappoint ment that he has by this appeal provoked opposition to the administration which did not and should not exist, thereby qualifying the respect and admiration they accorded him. The President has had the hearty in dorsement of all patriotic citizens regardless of party preference, and in his exalted posi tion he should have been the last to stir up unnecessary resentment and strife. -Miss Anne M. Lang, general manager The Dalles chapter, American Red Cross. When- Republicans are supporting the President in every war measure we Republi can women who have sons in the Army see no reason why our privilege of voting as we think right should be interfered with. Mrs. R. A. Holmes. Medford. SENIORITY RIGHT TO RULE Railroads Told to Help Returning Soldiers and Sailors. "WASHINGTON, Nov. 1. TEACHERS MAY FORGE PAY ATTORSEY-GEXERAL IS ASKED ' FOR LEGAL; OPIXIOX. Suspension of Salaries During In fluenza Epidemic Cause Edu cators to Seek Counsel. SALEM, Or.. Not. 1. (Special.) Dis trict Attorney Evans, of Multnomah County, will ask Attorney-General Brown foran opinion as to the author ity by whiL'h Portland schools are closed. It is understood from word re ceived here. The Inquiry is said to have been inspired by the fact that the School Board for the Portland district has refused to pay teachers' salaries for the duration of the Spanish influ enza epidemic until the legality of the situation is determined. It is understood there is much dissat isfaction among the school teachers in Portland over the fact that they are unable to secure their salaries. - Superintendent Churchill has advised Clerk Thomas, of the board, that the salaries should be paid, but it is under stood that the clerk desires a legal opinion and has asked District Attorney Evans to furnish one. It is expected that the District Attor ney will put the matter up to the Attorney-General. The Attorney-General's office already has ruled ' that in the case of a scarlet fever 'epidemic the teachers should be paid. This ruling was made, however, before the incum bency of Mr. Brown.
