.Fully 4000 people went through the
raits at the Multnomah County Fair
grounds today, which was Fraterna
and School day. iltny school children
-were enabled to take advantage of
"time off from studies to enjoy the
fine exhibits and races which were
held In the afternoon.
Many lodges were In attendance en
manse, several auto parties coming out
from Portland. The day was Ideal and
one of the best the fair association has
had in the past two or three years on
i raternal day.
Tomorrow is Patriotic day and ar
ranKemets have been made to have
several Important addresses made dur
Ids: toe day and In the evening.
Music this year is an especial fea
ture, several bands giving; their serv
Ives to the fair.

to the conference Senator Chamberlain
held some time ago with the War In
dustries Board concerning the Inter
ests of Portland merchants and the
Christmas trade, the board today sub
mitted to the Senator its programme
for conserving resources, labor and
material.
It Is urged that merchants sell chief
ly useful gifts; that people be encour
aged to buy only useful gifts; that they
buy early, carry the goods home and
mail early everything that Is to go by
post.
Joseph Pulitzer Enlists.
CHICAGO. Sept. 20 Joseph Pulitzer,
editor of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch
and director of the New York World
Corporation, has enrolled in the avia
tion training school at Great Lakes
r.aval training station. Mr. Pulitzer Is
