Government Estimates for Mlssonrl and
Nebraska May Prove 100,000,
, 000 Bnshela Too Large.
CHICAGO. Aug. . 12. Pessimistic crop re
ports from Nebraska and Missouri, together
with complaints of excessive heat in the
Southwest, had much to do toway with
bringing about sham advances in the nrice
of corn. The market closed strong, 3 to 3 tec
net higher, with September S5.62V4 to $1.62
and October $1.63 hi to $1.6314. Oats gained
Vi to 3i3:c The finish In provisions
ranged from 15c decline to a rise of 12c
Except Just at the outset and during an
other brief interval an hour later, the corn
market showed a decided upward tendency
throughout the day. The temporary set
backs were ascribed to reports of scattered
showers, but opinion became general that
the moisture thus supplied was Inadequate.
Then a leading expert went on record with
a statement that owing to Irreparable in
Jury by heat and drouth the Government es
timate of yield for Nebraska and Missouri
would prove 100.000,000 bushels too large.
Large receipts depressed oats, but later
the strength of corn gave prices an upward
swing.
In provisions the fact that hogs had
touched $20.15. the topmost price on rec
ord, was a strengthening factor. Demand
for pork, however, was lacking.
Leading futures ranged as follows:

Advance Due to Belief of Speedy
Settlement of Question of Stabil
izing Earnings and Dividends.
JLiberty Bonds Over Par.
NEW YORK, Aug. 12. Railroad stocks'
were the conspicuous features of today's
sluggish and Irregular market, moving up to
best prices of several months, presumably
in anticipation of a speedy settlement of
the question of stabilizing earnings and divi
dends. Grangers and transcontinental were most
active, St. Paul common and preferred ad
vancing 2H and 3 respectively. Canadian
Pacific caused a scramble of short coverings
on its extreme gain of 3 points. Union Pa
cific rose 2, Great Northern 14 and North
ern Pacific and Southern Pacific 1 each.
Foreign news yielded none of its hopeful
character, but war Issues rested on- their
laurels of last week. United States Steel
made a trivial gain at the outset, but re
acted abruptly later, closing at a loss of 14
points.
Shippings and oils also failed to fulfill
last Saturday's promise of improvement, and
coppers were again inclined to sag on very
moderate offerings. Total sales amounted
to 433,000 shares.
Investment bonds and Internationals were
firm, Anglo-French 5s leading the latter
group. Liberty 3&s were at the new hig:
of 100.06 for the year. Sales, par value,
aggregated $5,450,000. Old United States
bonds were unchanged on call.
