General rains and the break-up of the
hot wave tended plainly to dispel fears of
an extension of crop damage In the corn
belt. Aggressive selling which resulted was
emphasized somewhat by bearish Inferences
regarding the Government report 'but as a
rule the report was looked on as having
been discounted in advance.
Oata ranged lower with corn. Liberal ar
rivals of oats added to the selling pressure.
.Weakness of provisions was sttrlbuted in
some degree to the Federal Trade Com

Mysterious Characters Found on

MARSHFIELD, Or., Aug. 9. (Spe
ciaL) A mysterious character adorn
ing the doors of 100 or 150 Marsh
field and North Bend home) is agitating
those whose homes have been marked
and creating a mild sensation of mys

found them in several parts of the
city.
The character is fishhook in shape
and two and a half inches in height.
The secret work has been going on
for the past two months, although dls
covered only three days ago. Some
times an X or a C is placed in the
circle.
Many theories are. advanced for solv
ing the mystery, but none seems ten
able.
