THE MORNING OREGONIAJf, TUESDAY, JULY 23, 1913.
AIRCRAFT HELD COSTLY
WASTE OB" MILLIONS CHARGED BY
, MILITARY COMMITTEE.
Twelve Honored Training: Planes Cot-
Ina; $, 000,000 Jinked Becanae of
i Being; Too Dangerous.
WASHINGTON, July 22. Waste of
millions of dollars in experimenting
with the English, Bristol and other
types of airplanes -will be reported to
Congress by the Senate military sub
committee investigating- aircraft pro
duction, members of the committee said
today.
Other findings of the committee, eaid
Senator Thomas, chairman of the com
mittee, and other members, will be that
1200 training; planes costing: $6,000,000
recently were "junked" because they
were too dangerous for use; that sev
eral aviators have been killed In
flights with dangerous types of planes,
and that amateurs In the engineering
and administrative sections have con
tributed to the delay In production.
Responsibility for part of the delay
was placed on the former aircraft pro
duction board, but they said that the
prospects for the future are much im
proved. All members of the committee were
agreed that the Liberty motor is a
complete success. It is too heavy for
the Britsol plane. Senators said, and
that type had been abandoned by the
War Department.
Rev. James Holburn, of Alyth, Perth
shire, England, a Y. M. C. A. war work
secretary, was dangerously wounded
at the front during the recent drive.
He lost his right eye.

Roses are red and violets are blue;
The Oaks has a flower for each
of you.
Thought we were going to 6ay
sugar, didn't you? erely broke
into print with verse so we could
lead up to the subject of flowers.
Are you among those individuals
who epend their days looking for
the good things of life with their
heads held so high that they can't
see that they are trampling them
under feet? The question is old,
but calls to mind that many patrons
of the park hurry through it, pleasure-bound,
without noting its im
mense collection of rare blooms.
If you made a tour of the park
with Gardener Lowitz, who has
mothered the shrubbery and flow
ers for eight years. Summer and
Winter, you would learn that there
are more than 20,000 different va
rieties of plants in the 18 acres.
Some of them have unpronounceable
names, but are just as sweet if re
ferred to merely as flowers.
One of the interesting pieces of
shrubbery at this time is the Bel
gian laurel, imported years ago.
There are 190 of them in the park.
They are offsprings of the tree
with which the old Grecians and
Romans used to decorate the brows
of their heroes. The Belgian laurel
is an immortally green plant; snow
nor ice nor sleet never dims its
verdure. Possibly it is typical of
the spirit of the stricken but brave
little country now writhing tinder
the German heel.
Set some afternoon aside to
spend with the wonderful flowers
at Oaks Amusement Park.
