FUTURE OF ALBANY
SCHOOL UNCERTAIN
Question of Financial Aid for
Colleqe Likely to Be De
cided Soon.
INSTITUTION FACES DEBT
Whether Presbyterian Cliurcli or
Oregon AVIII Continue Support
3Iay Be Determined at Synod
Meeting Xeit Week.
EUGENE, Or.. July 19. (Special.)
The question of whether the Presby
terian Church in Oregon and the Na
tional educational board of the Presby
terian Church will continue to give'
financial aid to Albany College will in
all probability be determined finally by
action to be taken by the fresbyterlan
Synod of Oregon, which will meet in
Kugene Tuesday and continue in ses
eion for four days.
At the session of the synod last year,
following the failure of a movement to
consolidate the college with Pacific
University., a Congregational school at
"orest Grove, the synod served an ulti
matum upon the trustees of the college.
The resolution adopted by the synod
declared that there was no hope of re
moval of the college, in view of the
fact that 14 of the 20 members of the
Doara or trustees are residents of Linn
County and that the legal status of
the endowment was such that unan
imous consent of th trustees would be
necessary before a. merger with an
other school could be effected.
Alternatives Are Suggested.
It was further declared that unless
the trustees found immediate relief
frcm pressing indebtedness to teach
ers and others, they should go to the
courts or Legislature and procure per
mission to administer their trust else
wnere or close the college doors.
The finding of facts submitted by a
committee from the Synod stated that
the college had a debt of J73.'Jl3.35,
which it was apparently unable to pay.
This report also stated:
"The endowment has been impaired
by failure to collect $41, $36 of sub
scriptions pledged and ty use of cer
tain endowment securities as collateral
foi loans obtained, th:s action being
in violation of specific- conditions upon
v.-hich $SO,000 of endowment funds are
held."
The action of , the Synod last year
virtually put the question of the con
tinuation of the college into the hands
of the people of Linn County, calling
upon them to provide needed funds. The
business sessions of the synod this year
will be devoted largely to this matter,
with interest centering on reports by
the trustees of the college and by Rev.
W. H. Lee, president of the institution.
Wr Work to Be Discussed.
One session of the Synod will be de
Voted to a conference for the discus
sion of problems growing out of the
war and the part which the Presby
terian Church must play in the .recon
struction of the world. Rev. James F.
Ewing, of Portland, -will deliver a
series of lectures on historical aspects
of the war.
A report of a committee appointed by
the Synod last year to confer with sim
ilar committees from other churches
on educational matters in the Willam
ette Valley will be submitted on Toes
day. Interest in this report is height
ened by the existence of several educa
tional institutions of different churches
in close proximity of each other in the
valley, where the University of Oregon
and the Oregon Agricultural College
also are located.

CHAT NO. 52.
Portland proper did not have a
corner on the celebration of the
boys' victory "over there." Out at
Oaks Amusement Park, where hun
dreds had gathered for picnicking,
there was a celebration not quite
so big in numbers as that down
town, but wholly equaling it in
warmth and loyalty. Just when
the whistles were blowing their
loudest in and around Portland,
George E. Jeffery and his orchestra
struck up the "Star-Spangled Ban
ner" in the immense sideless audi
torium, and the . crowd of outdoor-
lovers that had gathered to see the
Armstrong Folly Company in the
"Red Widow" stood with hatless,
bowed heads and offered up a silent
prayer for the Yankee soldiers who
are ripping their way through
ramparts of i steel in Northern
France.
It was a simple yet beautiful
tribute from the folks at home to
the boys over there.
This afternoon and tonight will
mark the last performances of
"The Red Widow." Tomorrow, Sun
day, "The Isle of Joy" will be the
offering. The chorus in this last
production is an entire show in
itself. The Oriental dance by Miss
June Madison will be a top-line
vaudeville feature alone.
