available to retailers and suggesting

Committee Meets ToIit.
It is to the latter part of the etate-
m' tne already euspicious con
sumer attaches special significance. It
nope tnat the retailer will be
virtually forced to sell at the prices
fULmsucu as xeasonaDie by the com
mittee. Incidentally, the "price Inter
pretation" movement is a plan of the
Rational Food Administration and is
being inaugurated in practically all
states. The local committee will hold
its first session today.
Thomas Karrell, of the wholesale
rm of Everdtng: & Karrell. who has
been appointed as assistant Federal
Food Administrator for Oregon, will
represent the Food Administration on
the price interpretation committee, and
will act as its chairman. Other mem
bers of the committee are Mrs. George
H. Lamberson, well-known civic work
er and clubwoman, and Oscar Home
acting secretary of the Central Labor
Council, representing the consumers;
E- Carr, of Lang & Co., representing
the wholesale grocers, and Joseph
Oreen, of Green's Market, representing
the perishable products stores; a com
mittee representing downtown and
suburban retail groceries, consisting of
-ruumer, 01 ijumner & Hickey;
K. G. Garton, of Olds, Wortman &
King: J. C. Mann, of 401 Hassalo
street; "William G. Palmer, of Palmer

and Donald Day, of Day Bros.
Public Welfare Object.
"This committee has been selected
with great deal of care." said Assist
ant Food Administrator W. K. Newell,
in making the announcement for Mr.
Ayer, "so that all classes of the gro-
tei y irauo wouia De lainy represented,
and the committee should have the en
tire confidence of the public. This
price-interpretation committee.
been formed for the purpose of secur-
"'s 6i.ib 10 me pudiic run in
formation as to the cost of the stanlo
food products and to suggest proper
margins 01 pront to be taken by the
retailers.
"The wholesalers are already defi
nitely limited as to the profits they
may take under rulings from the Na
tional Food Administration. It is im
possible to definitely set such margins
on the retail trade because of varying
conditions, hence the need of a price
interpretation system which will ex
tend into every county in the state.
Each county administrator will form a
committee similar to that which has
been appointed for Portland, and these
committees will make investigations
and give out price Interpretations in
the same way through their local news
papers. These committees will meet
each week and prepare their schedules
for publication.
"It should be understood clearly that
these prices will not be definite and
absolute, but are suggested prices that
will be reasonable for both consumer
and dealer at the time and in the lo
cality wnere published.
