The Portland public is invited and
xpected to participate in the Flag day
celebration Friday night at the Munici
pal Auditorium, when a programme will
follow a parade through the downtown
streets. The programme is under the
auspices of the Elks' Club, and mem
bers of the Multnomah Guard, under
Colonel Hibbard. the Oregon State Mili
tia, commanded by Captain W. C.
Korth. and members of the Grand Army
of the Kepublic will take part.
The parade will start at 7:30 o'clock
from the Klks' Club rooms on Stark
street, near Broadway. The Elks' band
and the Multnomah Guard band will be
in the parade. The programme at the
Auditorium will follow immediately on
the conclusion of the procession. There
will be a flag drill by school children,
musical selections by Eloise Anite Hall,
Ralph W. Hoyt and Stuart McGuire and
the talks will be by L.. J. Simpson. Col
onel Robert Leader and Charles Ring

Guard to Turn Out.
The Multnomah Guardsmen will be
In the parade, probably 1000 strong, and
they have been ordered to assemble at
6:30 at the state- Armory.
Charles Ringler, exalted ruler of the
Elks, has sought to impress upon the
Jiublic that the programme is for the
public, and that the Elks have volun
teered to handle the details. The pro
gramme .inside the Auditorium is
scheduled to begin not later than 8:15
o'clock.
Throughout the Nation the day will
fce observed universally with' the dis
play of the stars and stripes and with
special exercises in many of the schools
nil in patriotic organizations.
The Daughters of the American Rev
olution have taken the lead in formu
lating rules for the proper and digni
fied use of the flag. Through their
efforts the flag is no longer used In ad
vertisements and as a table cloth or
drape over a speaker's table on which
Pooks or pitchers of water are placed.

Troops at Vancouver to Be Reviewed
on Post- Parade Ground,'
VANCOUVER, Wash., June 12. CEpe
ciali) Flag day will be appropriately
celebrated in Vancouver under the aus
rfices of the Vancouver Lodge -of Elks,
Friday evening, Mune 14. There will be
a military parade under Colonel Van
Wey, who will review the troops and
retreat will be sounded.
Led by the band from the "G. . M.
Standifer Construction Corporation, the
parade through the business section of
Vancoupver will start at 7:30 o'clock
from Tenth and Main streets.
The parade will lead to the post,
where the troops will be reviewed by
Colonel Van Wey. The publisc is In
vited to the review, and the ritualistic
services by the Elks in - front of the
grand stand in the post athletic field.
There will be ample seating capacity
lor. several thousand people and it la
expected many will motor -from Port
land and other nearby cities.
The . Elks' tribute - to the flag by
George B. Simpson will be followed by
a patriotic address by Donald McMas
ter an eloquent speaker of this city.
The band will end tre services by play
ing "America." -

has requested that all flags on display

an elaborate Chautauqua here this sea
son. At a meeting last night, the fol
lowing executive committee was ap
pointed -to arrange for the event to be
held the week of July 8-13: R. E. Scott,
A. F. Howes, G. A. Molden, S. E. Bart
mess and A. ' G. Lewis. Mrs. Lewis,
president of the Hood River Woman's
Club, wilt appoint two members of her
organization to-assist with the work.
The Chautauqua will be held at an
open-air theater in a city park.
