IX 11 DAYS.
Sergeant J. S. Hendrix and Associates
at Fort Benjamin Harrison
Are Making; Good
' In just 11 days promotions from the
ranks wera earned' by each one of the
four Portland men sent to Fort Ben
jamin Harrison under the occupational
call of last month to nerve as engineers
in the railway service.
These men entrained here May 17 and
the report -of their promotions from
the ranks was written May 28. On this
date three of the men were sergeants
and the fourth was a corporal.
J. S. Hendrix, now first sergeant In
Company C. Sixty-second Engineers,
writing to members of local board No.
2, by whom he and his three associates
were inducted, says:
"Just a line to let you know that we
Oregon boys are still maintaining that
old, Oregon spirit of 'over the top in
everything.' This is the record we
four made: !
"J. S. Hendrix, first sergeant, ComT
"P. W. Koontz, sergeant and company
"Paul Peterson, sergeant Company C.
".T. L. Snyder, corporal Company C.
"We boys are In Company C, Sixty
second Engineers, and expect, to leave
here in about five weeks for France.
"We have been classified exactly as we
volunteered, and everybody is well,
i "They are going to feed us 10-penny
nails in the finishing touches."
FAST MOTORCYCLIST TAKEN
John Lekos, Speeder, Gets $50 Fine
and Jail Sentence.
A fine of $50 and a sentence of one
day in jail was the penalty Imposed
yesterday by Municipal Judge . Ross
man upon John Lekos, motorcycle
speeder. Lekos not only "knows how
to drive a motorcycle art terrific speed
but is exceptionally skillful in turning
corners without slackening his pace.
He traveled three miles in a loop in
St. Johns while the best Motorcycle Of
