CHICAGO. April 8. Bullish Interpreta
tion of ths crop report, together with offi

oats gained lcgjUftc, and provisions
shade to 12c.
Corn exhibited strength right from the
outset. Oeneral belief prevailed that the
May delivery would reach the maximum
level of prices as apon as business in new
style future deliveries began, for the Changs
in rules makes the commercial grades of
corn the contract grades.
Oats were firmer, largely In sympathy
with corn. Ths Uovernment figures on the
probable wheat yield tended also to lift
ths oats market, as tbe estimate was less
favorable than had been looked for. Pack
ers' buying rallied provisions.

Shorts Inclined to Sell on Character
of News From France? Lowest
Quotations In Final Hour.
Call Money Rate Higher.
NEW TORK, April 8. Stocks were more
or less neglected today by reason of Wall
street's complete absorption In the new lib
erty loan. Dealings exceeded any of last
week's dull sessions by a slight margin,
but the market's narrow ranee Indicated
the perfunctory character of the trading.
Meager advices from "the "Western theater
of the war afforded the shorts a pretext
for exerting occasional pressure, but in Im
portant -ahares this caused only moderate
impairment.
Minimum quotations were registered in
the final hour, the further reaction ac
companying an advance In call loans from
4 to 6 per cent, presumably In consequence
of last Saturday's adverse bank statement.
Sales amounted to 245.000 shares.
Virtually no funds were obtainable at the
longer time periods, but quotations were
slightly higher, a per cent being offered
for accommodations extending from three
to six months.
The bond market wss featureless, aside
from further selling of liberty issues, espe
cially the aecond 4s, at gradual declines.
Total sales, par value, aggregated $4,175,000.
United States bonds, old issues, were un
changed on call.

POLICE RESPOND IN HASTE
Burglar's Alarm From Bank Proves
Alertness of Officers.
At 4:46 o'clock yesterday afternoon
a burglar's alarm was received at police
headquarters from the United States
National Bank. At 4:49 Captain Ins
keep and squad of officers, in uniform
and plain clothes, were at the bank,
ready to lay their hands on the cul
prit, loaded down with bullion, cur
rency and such other staple goods
handled by a financial Institution, but,
alasl their visions for a big catch went
a-gllmmerlng.
The serenity and usual composure of
bank officials and clerks at once made
It plain to the police officers that no
robbery had taken place, nor that even
an attempt to crack the safe had been
made.
Upon investigation it was found that
some person in the bank had acci
dentally touched the burglar alarm
However, It proved a successful test,
for the guardians of the peace were
on the job just three minutes after
the alarm was received.

GOOD JOB GOES BEGGING
Nobody In Oregon City Precinct
Wants Election Work.
OREGON CITY, April 8. (Special.)
To date it has been impossible to
find a single election clerk or judge
in Precinct No. 7, Oregon City, who will
consent to act as judge or clerk at the
coming elections.
Usually a wild scramble occurs each
year for the elections posts, but the
efforts of the clerk to obtain men or
w,omen for the work this year has
been of no avail. The precinct is what
s known as the "Kansas City" section.
Any responsible person in the pre
cinct can land a nice job if he or she
will report to the clerk's office.
