Immediate Federal protertlon of the

ta requested In a telegram sent yester

orrrlary o tho Portland Chamber of
Commtrr.
Representations mad to the Cham

milk condtiutri and dairymen from
eliy points are that tha Federal con
trol of their output for export, whlrh
went Into tffct two months ago, haa
pile.1 tho warehouses of tho various
rnnd'&serles to rapacity, without out
let to tho markets. As a result, two
plants have failed, and others are con
fronted with the Imminent necessity
for closing their doers unless relief Is
offered.
It was the expressed policy of the
Fod Administration, said Mr. Doclson.
to conserve the supply of canned milk
for i port to the American Army and
Ita allies abroad. Condensers hare
been Informed that lark of shipping fa
cilities across the Atlantic have oper

As tho result of this, fir of tha
smaller condensrtea of the Willam
ette Valley now hare SS04.000 worth of
condensed milk In their warehouses,
the product of two months' operations,
and It Is estimated that the two larir
pianta at Forest llrova and Htllsboro
are enforcedly holding; several times
this amount.
Dairymen who hava hitherto sold
their product to tha two plants
have failed hava turned to the re
fog condenserlea for outlet. These
already crowded to full storage capac
ity, it ta said, and will soon be un
able either to store further produc
tion or to finance operations.
Mix thousand farmers more or less
smeared In tha dairy business to sup
ply the condensed milk plants and whs
have no other market for their product
will be forced to slaughter their herds
unless a market Is soon afforded the
plants for their stock now In atorace.
The problem la serious, comment
ed Secretary Iodson. "The condensers
are unable under prrsent conditions to
market their product, while their ware
houses are filled to tha roofs. They
have two months pack on band,
riaats taUl Fall.
"Tha selling prlca fixed by tha Gov
ernment doea not give them enough
margin to permit shipment to Port
land and atoraga here, that they might
clear their own warehouses, nor will
the smaller plants have money to carry
the burden much longer.
-We are going to undertake solu
tion of the matter along tha same line
employed upon tha requirement that
grain farmers were to get their money
at tidewater, whtcb waa amended In
aucb a way that grain growers were
enabled to receive payment near pro
ducing points.
"The Government should take our
milk at market price, or else afford
shipping facilities to atorage renters.
With the approach of Spring, when the
production of milk la vastly Increased,
the problem ta Intensified. Under pres
ent condltlolns there Is nothing but
ruin ahead for the condensers, and the
consequent loss of a valuable Industry.
fur farmers will slaughter their herds
when the market ceases. There would
be nothing else for them to do.
