LUMBER COMPANY IS SUED
Government Would Recover $65,600
for 6360 Acres In Baker County.
A clil suit was filed In the Federal
Court yesterday by Assistant United
States Attorney Beckman In which the
Government seeks to recover S6,600
from the Oregon Lumber Company,
Joseph Barton, Frederick H. Atkinson
and Frank M. Shurtliff for 6560 acres
of land alleged to have been Illegally
acquired by tha defendants. In its
t .
complaint the Government alleges that
these lands, consisting of 43 timber and
stone claims In Baker County, were
acquired by the defendants In 1900 as
the result of a conspiracy by which
employes of the lumber company filed
on the land and afterward deeded it to
the company.
The Government brought a suit
against the lumber company several
years ago, seeking to ca.ncel the'patents
to the lands involved in the pending
suit, but the case was decided In favor
of the defendants. The statute of limi
tations had run against the time in
which that suit could be prosecuted.
