A musical "drlv" t about to take plac to make up an apparent deficit of about 13000 la th budget of th Portland Srmohony Orchestra for tna remainder of th concert season of 117-18. in which four more concerts ara In prospect. Th matter waa dlsoussad raterday t a meetlnar of about 10 representa tives of the different mueio oiuds oz thla eltr. held In th Benson Hotel. A committee of fir waa decided upon, th personnel to b announced later, to ask tbs leading- elvlo elubs of thla cltr to take actlva ebai-g-e of sa'.llna- tickets for th next four re malnlng- concert! of th season; that a larrer orchestra be provided for; to Inquire Into th possibility of maklng th Portland Symphony Orchestra Into a oItIo orchestra," sponsored by the City Council, and to ee If tbs us of tb Publlo Auditorium cannot be granted In future free of ail eharg-es for the symphony concerts It was urirested that on clrlc club after an. other take charge of selling tickets for each separata concert. Sidney G. Apparent deficit from about 19145, the sum necessary to defray the expenses of this season's concerts, $3000. "Last season the men of the sym phony orchestra were each paid from tit to 120 per oonoert," remarked Mr. Lathrop. "In San Francisco tb sym phony orchestra men were each paid last season a minimum salary of 130 per concert, whether the concert took place or not. and some of the men were paid each 1200 per oonoert. The San Francisco Symphony Orchestra has a guarantee fund of 40.000, some of the 8an Francisco subscriber paying 15000 each a year for a period of five year. Now, I do not mean that the member of th Portland Symphony Orchestra play only for the money that'a in lr In fact, many of our symphony players have said rather than see the symphony orchestra dis banded they are willing to play without salary. But other members are profes sional' musicians who play musical in struments to make a living for their families and thamselvea. and such men should not be expected to play for nothing." "Our symphony orchestra 1 a clvlo affair." said William D. Wheelwright. "The School Board ought to appropri ate 11000 to pay for the rehearsals of symphony muslo heard by Portland school children. Place thla matter of a deficit before our olvlo olub and ask th men of on olub to tak charg of one concert Get up a guarantee fund, of. say, 30 people, at $100 each, and I am willing to pay my tl00." William P. Woodward thought that the aid of bualnesa men should be en listed. M. Christ ens en moved the adoption of the motion to ask the olvlo olubs to take charge of the ensuing concerts, and added that he would also subscribe 1100 to a guarantee fund.
