Corn Traders Operate on Theory
That Outlook for Early Peace Has
Been Improved Tendency
of Forenoon Market Firm.
CHICAGO. Jan, 8. President Wilson's Ad
dress to Congress brought about consideraale
selling of grain today, chiefly by dealers who
drew quick Inferences that the outlook for
an early peace had been Improved. Such
optimism, however, did not seem to be
shared by the bulk of the trade, who held off
pending further developments. Prices closed
unsettled, a shade to 4 cents net lower for
corn, with January 31.274 91.27 and May
31.25 to 11.25 4. Oats showed a net loss of
14c to lc. Provisions finished 10c to 35c
down.
Until tha Prerfldent's address became
factor, corn prices displayed firmness owing
to scantiness of arrivals.. As soon, however,
